Title: Well, hi there!
Post by: CommonSense on 5 January 2005, 06:12
We're back!

And we're on a new server, actually PAYING for hosting now.  Which means (a) it should be a hell of a lot more reliable now; (b) there's actually this thing called a "technical support department" that we can bitch to when things screw up.

Our new hosting is Canadian Web Hosting (canadianwebhosting.com), located in Vancouver.  Yep, we've moved north of the border -- offshored the whole thing, if you will.  Mail is currently still going through the old servers in Orange County, California, but will soon be moved to The Public Internet's home offices in crappy-ass Sayreville, New Jersey.

And we're going to be using vBulletin soon.  We've purchased the license and we're all legit; now we just need to import everything.  That's coming soon.  In the meantime, you can still log in as yourself, post messages, respond to old threads, etc.

Have fun!

Tell everyone Microsuck is back, alive and kicking    (http://smile.gif)

And... now this forum is hosted in Canada, the COPPA age check is now off, so your 8 year old brother can join our forum too without your parents permission   :D

Because vBulletinBoard has an actual helpdesk, and it converts UBB perfectly.
And... vBulletinBoard is much better and flexible than phpBB, admit it   (http://smile.gif)

Also, every lil' website in this world has phpBB, so at first I thought about yabbSE, but it didn't come with a decent converter, so vBulletinBoard came to mind. It's quite good, check a forum here (http://www.jazz2online.com/jcf/?styleid=1).

well, probably etting on with their lives, it's been 2 months since these forums have been online, they're not still going to be checking if it's back up every single day!

anyway, face it, many of the posters here were 100z0rz and 5|<r1pt |<16633z anyway, so you're probably better off this way for a while.

Whatever we were doing beforehand.

With that in mind, I suggest Refalm gather up the emails of users who were posting before the outage, and tell them.  (Already did this for the mods.)  For example, how about that guy Aloone?  He was funny.  :D

Wait...another idea.

Does the forum software support mass-emailing?  (Old or new...we could wait.)

Yes, the forum software does actually... however, I'm unable to activate it since we don't have mail installed on this server  (http://tongue.gif)

Well, now that we pay for hosting, I bet they'll actally obey if you tell them to install something.  :D

Wait wait wait.... there's no way to email via script in this server? You got gypped.
Course... you could always write a quick script to pull all the email addresses from the database and simply mail them all (if it's just that the forum doesn't support a method for email, but the server does)

No, we have the scripts, just no mail service running as of now.
Title: Well, hi there!
Post by: CommonSense on 11 January 2005, 05:34
Does the mail service have to run on the same box?  Or can it use another SMTP server (provided that server allows relaying from here)?  Because the latter can easily be arranged.
Title: Well, hi there!
Post by: skyman8081 on 11 January 2005, 21:46
You can probably get away with either.  Most modern forum software packages can use an external SMTP server, or the local MTA.

vB should DEFINATELY support this, but as to whether or not UBB does, is another question entirely.

"The UBB provides two methods for handling all functions that involve email: Sendmail for Unix/Linux based servers and SMTP for Win32 servers. Sendmail is installed on most Unix/Linux servers by default. The SMTP option for Win32 requires you to have an SMTP email server that will allow email relay from your domain."

But I tested it with my ISP's server (thanks Doogee!), and it didn't work, but that really doesn't say anything    (http://smile.gif)

AIM chat:

quote:
Doogee: START THE RIOT BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM START THE RIOT BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
Doogee:  The SMTP server returned the following message:   550relaying mail to refalm.com is not allowed  The SMTP server has rejected the email address the UBB tried to send mail to. Please ensure that the UBB is allowed to relay mail through the SMTP server, and that the From: email address ([email protected]) is a valid email address for this domain.

Well, yeah, of course THAT didn't work.  It isn't supposed to.

The soon-to-be-online MES mail server can do it.  I'll make sure it accepts connections from the web server, since I don't know what SMTP server I'm able to use from the web host (if any), which is in Canada.  It's a little less than ideal to have the web server, which is located in Vancouver, connect to a box in New Jersey to send out mails, but it should be fine, since the bottleneck is likely to be the speed of the mail server's connection (1.0 / 768 DSL) anyway.

Mail server should be up within a week or less . . . I'll let you know.  I'm sure Refalm will nag me via IM anyway.    ;)

So after all this time Microsuck is back up again!

But why hasn't anyone posted here since 12th January?

How are we going to  eradicate Microsoft if the shitty Linux server running this site can't even keep running.  :D  Even my machine running Windows XP has longer up times!

Anyway it's nice to be back!

Looks like the MES was back on the 4th but since the 12th it's been inactive, did it go down again?

Where have all the members gone?

Look on the bright side, hopefully this little break has got rid of some people we don't want back like Great_Satan.

The web host changed IP address on Friday, and I'm not sure if they changed physical boxes, too.  If they did, then it means they must've backed up all the data to the new box.  I did the IP change on the name server within minutes of receiving the e-mail from them, so hopefully we didn't lose anny posts.

Also, there were some weird DNS issues that caused site access to be kind of spotty.  I'm HOPING it's OK now, but I'm not entirely sure.

Conversion to vBulletin is coming soon, but the thing holding it up is that it can only convert from UBB 6.3 or later.  This is 6.1.0.2.  So we may have to do a conversion to phpBB, then convert from that to vBulletin.  Which could be clumsy.

Oh, if only I had a copy of UBB 6.3 or later . . .
