I just have a quick question, does anyone know anything about the new AMD 64-bit processor which is supposed to be released in April and rival Intel's Itanium? I have been Googling and on some Tech/News boards but everything I have found is from mid 2002 and earlier. I just want to find some current news releases and info on the processor so I can show my roommate (a DieHard Intel advocate) that AMD is working on releasing a 64-bit processor as well. He seems to think it will not be coming out until late this year or next.

well, only apps that are 64bit would get a benifit, but changing the size of int isn't the only thing AMD is doing for the chip, arn't they using HyperTransport and giveing it 16gp registers instead of the x86 standerd of 8? doesn't that make it more scalable becuase of the way the bandwidth is distributed to and from the proccossr, correct me if im wrong?. however things like filesystems and databases and anything else that uses large address spaces will get a big boost. and native memory limits will be much higher, even though the xeon can see somewere arount 64gig's of ram, it does this by segmenting the ram which is not optimal. however, a 64bit chip can see oodles of ram, i don't know off the top of my head how much, but its a lot.

Here are basically the couple good recent articles I have found
ZDNet (http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-981640.html)
This one is about the Opteron (name of the 64-bit processor) being paired with Linux
ZDNet Oct 2002 (http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-962312.html)
AMD is also boasting that their processor does not require new OS to run unlike the Intel alternative. Any additional info would be great if you have it.

Sorry to double post so soon, I couldn't find that article though. Thanks
