Title: Getting rid of index.dat
Post by: popeyeralph on 12 January 2003, 04:16
Tried to delete the file ie5 in "temp internet folders" but the prompt says "system file" and won't allow it. Yet it contains info about my viewing habits I would rather be without. How do I get rid of the sucker?

First of all, welcome to the boards. Now, as to your question, I'm afraid I can't help since I don't use Windows. Perhaps, you should read the "Microsoft's really hidden files" article for an answer to your problem. However, if that doesn't help you could always pay a visit to the windowsbbs page (http://www.windowsbbs.com).    (http://smile.gif)

[edit]or as choas wrote you could use an operating system that doesn't make you its bitch (no offense)[/edit]

one small solution would be to use a real browser. (http://www.mozilla.org) But i feel the best solution is to use an "operating System that doesn't make you its bitch". (http://www.redhat.com) (Thanks chaosforages  (http://smile.gif)  )

okay, here's one article about getting rid of index.dat files (http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml) and here's another one (http://belg88.com/faqman/index.php?op=view&t=66).

Actually the best way to sort out this problem is to set up a dual boot with linux. i found that once i booted into linux, i could easily delete all those windows files using konqueror or nautilus (both of which are at least as easy to use as windows explorer).
