Title: woo hoo! I'm getting a mac!
Post by: Heywood on 2 August 2003, 07:20
Well, its upgrade time for me again, and my budget was 1200 bucks. I racked my brain for nearly a month, and explored all options, and I landed on: A G4 1.25 ghz. I am getting a lot of crap for it at school, but this is what I've settled on.

My last mac was a Apple 2E I had in the 80s, but I have worked with them and tinkered here and there for the past couple years. I know enough to get around on one, and I have extensive BSD experience, which (I hope) will help with OSX.

My current PC is a 1.4ghz tbird with Slack and XP on it, and its fine for doing my work, but its seen better days. I figured since my work is graphic and webdesign, a MAC would do, and after weighing out all my options, my girlfreind says "you are always praising MACs. You should get one". I thought about it real hard, and decided I should. I am hearing nothing but reasons why I shouldn't from my friends, but I remain strong, and I am getting one.

Am I making the right decision?

Cool, congratulations....it's a MAC.

Remember MAC are not solely graphics machines anymore, there also hardcore development boxes now. I run my MAC as an application server / Dev box, it's great, only a 466Mhz (lot's of RAM though), I have a  Pentium 1.2Ghz XP box which can't keep up.

Your friends obviously don't know what there talking about, have any of them ever actually used a MAC????

Lot's of RAM I hope.

Congratulations, Heywood.    (http://smile.gif)

My turn should come soon, hopefully... Damn my dad and his passion for building PeeCees*.

If only I could convince my dad to build a Mac...

*Just kidding. I like my dad.   (http://smile.gif)

Wow.. someone on this site with a Girl Friend.  You give all of us hope... or maybe I'm the only loser without a GF but wutever, you give me hope.

Yes BSD will help you a lot.

Wow, 1200 bucks for a 1.2.  I used the exact same deal as you are.  Right when the new Quicksilvers came out i got the Ed only 733 for 1200.  It had a 40gb hard drive and a CD Burner.  Now it has another 60GB hard drive and a SuperDrive.  Yours is super cooler though cus it can hold 2 optical drives and has Line and Mic in which I deperately wish I had now because of iChat AV.  I'm stuck on my Mom's iBook when I wanna audio chat.  I should probably go out and buy an iMic.

Hopefully when Panther comes out Apple will give it to you free (with a 20 dollar shipping fee.  You know, to get it off of their secret base on the moon overnight, they need 20 bucks.

You will not regret this decision.  I guarantee it.

P.S. Like Zardoz said.  Macs don't have to be used as Graphics machines (only).  Mine is my own web server.  With Apache and PHP (built in builds) and an installed MySQL server.  it runs my site that is linked in my signature.

its not so much that they don't know what they are talking about, they actually have some good points:

etc., which are valid points, however, there is something really "smooth" about the whole mac experience, I dont know if its the better GUI, or faster hardware, but I can really cook on a mac, doing just about anything. Thats one of the reasons, aside from the higher quality parts.

I could buy a P4 or dual AMD for the same price, but I have a feeling the MAC will outlast them, you guys are talking about still using 733s and stuff, and being happy with them, that kind of assures me that I can still use this machine 3 or 4 years from now, or more. I still think its the smarter move. For "production" purposes, I can't help but notice companies are almost always using macs for high-demand production environments.

still gonna get a mac, if its a mistake, oh well. there's always next time.

???
That's one of their strong points. not one of their weak points.  And hey, all OS's have bad points for different people - because they're aimed at different people.

And Macs _are_ PC's guys.  They're personal.  They're computers.  ;)

Now you see there the same old myths that keep going around.

1. Expensive??? Really? Yes if you don't have $1500 or so to spare yes, if you only want to spend $500 go buy a Dell or a Gateway. Really though this comparing chalk and cheese. It's stupid argument. Conversely I could spen $4000 on a Dell, so what.

2. expensive parts (upgrading) Upgrade when? to what, I recently spent
Title: woo hoo! I'm getting a mac!

1: expensive
Yeah you may pay a premium for Macs but I guess you get what you pay for.  You *always* pay a bit extra for the latest hardware and macs have some pretty nice hardware - for how long now has the firewire support been going on?  When this is still seen as "unnecessary" by most PC manufacturers.  If you want firewire in an intel box you have to go and goddamn buy it seperately - the same applies with wifi and mac lap tops.  Macs have some sweet hardware.

2: "hard to upgrade"
This is one of the ones I dislike.  I want to control my computer - I wanna shove bits in, take bits out, play with it, set up seperate boxes for seperate tasks by removing / adding bits.  You don't want to have complete control of your computer, I do.  Personal choice.  That said all OS's have bad points.

3: Less Software!
Word - sitting at a Mac now and the software is far better than the crap on the neighbouring win boxes.  Maybe games is a bit laggy (ie in Mac releases, not Mac usage) though...  We need a Mac / Linux / BSD / whatever gaming "coalition" thing happening here.

4. Learning curve.
Yep, takes care of everything for you.  Again not to my tastes but they do seem to excel at it.

What I'm saying dude is that the reasons you chose a Mac are valid reasons.  And if those are the reasons _you_ want then your friends can shove their Windows CD's up their arses.  And like shine torches up there and see if they can bounce it out there mouth.  Yeah.  Word.

PS: What the hell is that sig?  You show disrespect to Tux - now you must die.

That's only true for iMacs and eMacs. PowerMacs are just as upgradable as other PC's. PowerLogix and other hardware manufacturers offer processor and upgrades for PowerMacs, PowerBooks and even G3 iMacs. You can even build your own Mac if you like.

OMG did u just say... I didn't get a chevy because Olds are better?  Do you realise that Chevy and Oldsmobile are the same company?  They share all of the same parts and are made in the same facotories.  I'm sorry, your oldsmobile is a chevy.

pre-1975,the body's are made by fisher.
the trans are the same. the motors are NOT.  buick ,olds pontiac, and chevy use different motors . in 1975 gm standardized all the lines with chevy motors and then all went to shit. the buick ,olds, pontiac 455 c.i. motors are all different from each other as well as different from the chevy 455c.i. motor.

i could go into several differences that people who know, know.
so you know, i spend most of my week tits deep in greese fixing and cutomizing cars and have done so for the past 16years.
every ford i have driven or raced blewout the motor. every chevy broke after 6 runs or so.
my olds has 240,000 miles on it and i can barely drive it on the street because of to much power.
i also take yearly trips in it that range from 2000-6000 miles.

Faust made the point and it's an important one, Mac comes with firewire, ethernet etc.. All as standard, most or some of these features are extras on Wintel boxes.

Oh and by the way, It's Mac, not MAC. It doesn't stand for anything, that's its name.

MAC: 'Mandatory Access Controller', or 'Maybe A Computer' (very offensive)

Mac: Macintosh

MICROSOFT: Most Intelligent Customers Realise Our Software Only Fools Teenagers

Microsoft: Microsoft

LINUX: Linux Is Not UNIX

Linux: Linux

Conclusion: Be very careful when you capitalise.

you will be very happy with your powerbook. they are built very well and will be usable for years. and im talking about usable in a comfortable way, unlike my tp600. its many many years old.

now onto the old's chevy, buick argument.
general motors is the parant company for alot of things. you think microsoft has power, think about GM, they own hugh's (direct tv), 20% of fuji heavy industry's (think subaru), saab, oldmobile, buick, chevrolet, gmc, saturn, pontiac, cadillac, opel, hummer,  and probably alot more that i don't know about.

I believe when people argue that there are less applications, there is no way to beat a windows pc. It doesnt matter how many applications are available for an alternative OS, someone will bitch and moan because there is one application they just cant live without that isnt available for macs or linux.

In fact my roommate believes that windows is better than linux, because AOL wont run on linux.

I have a quick question. Should my brother get an iBook, or spend a couple extra hundred dollars on a PowerBook? He said that he's just a college student and won't need the extra power of a G4, but I think that the PowerBook will last much longer just because it does have the extra power. Any advice?

There both very good to be honest. Think the ibook was up for Linux hardware award recently. Guess it would always be better to have a G4 over a G3 if you can afford it. Personaly I love the ibooks, especially the 12'' models, there light and extremely portable.

Oh... you never mentioned its an old car.  I just assumed it was somewhere in the '90's.  I have been in Olds and Chevy's and GM's.  They have the same everything (now at least)  Even the handles above the doors, on the inside are the same.

I wish I had some engine skills.  I just need to take a college class or something on it.  I love cars.  I wish my parent's car had a 455 that would be rediculously awesome.

*falls down laughing* Sorry about that. But I can't help it - you have a very, um, not ISP-wise roommate.

So far as I'm concerned that's one of Linux's strong points because AOL is the absolute worst ISP out there. I'm on DSL now but when I was on dialup I was with Earthlink after I dropped AOL - Earthlink didn't kick me offline all the time (AOL seems to think you can't hear it when the computer is processing it as it comes down the line to kick you off    )

Now only if Earthlink would make broadband available when my contract is up.........

I was on AOL, if you enjoy forcing inferior software to do what it wasn't meant to (namely, sign on), then their browser is for you.

Well, I don't know for certain, but I've heard that ibooks can occasionally be troublesome. It seems the motherboard isn't constructed as well as the powerbooks.

tell him to go to amazon and get the powerbook.  They have 100 dollar rebates on all PowerBooks... that means a superdrive loaded 12"er for $1700.... what a great deal.  And the G4 will blow the G3 out of the water in OSX.
