Title: wiring question
Post by: Stryker on 23 October 2002, 05:01
I know MES probably isn't the best place, but you guys seem quite helpful. I have purchased an rj-45 terminator, but do not have a crimp tool (and can't afford one) what would be a good method of terminating the wire without buying a crimp?

You really need a crimp tool. You can get them at reasonable prices. If you still can't afford one, borrow one.

I talked to a teacher of mine at school, she'll let me borrow hers. Until then I have cut the end of one wire and the wire i have i used tape to put the wires together in the needed order. (i love tape...) looks like i'll be going shopping next payday.

I have an "Ideal Telemaster" crimp tool (Cat. No 30-496). It works pretty well and I am pretty sure it was less than 20 bucks. On second thought, it looks like it must have been closer to 40 bucks:

I steal all my RJ45 connectors from work, but they are cheap.

Hehe..."job perks"   :D

I want to do my house with in-wall wiring. Right now, the cabling is just lying around the house.

Or I could shut up and buy wireless equipment. But I can't give up gigabit networking for a meager 11 MBps or 45 MBps if I feel cash-happy.  (http://tongue.gif)

Thanks for the link void main

I have a solution for that. If you have a white floor, use white cable. You can barely see it.  (http://smile.gif)  Actually I run mine behind baseboards, under carpet, along walls. It would be nice to run it in the walls. If I ever build a new house I'll certainly wire it up right, but then they'll come out with a new cable standard.  (http://smile.gif)   Wireless would be nice but I don't trust the radiation levels.  But then I've been fixed long ago so I don't know what I'm worried about...

"Fixed"? Explain...I don't want to think what I'm thinking.

FYI: Your smoke detectors give off more radiation (the regular kind, anyway) than a wireless base point.

WHY?! OK, sorry. I'm sure you get that all the time.  :(

Why? I don't understand. Maybe you still don't know what I am referring to. It's a simple birth control procedure that millions of people get.

Ah. OK *NOW* I get it.

I thought it was more unintentional.

So you made the noble choice in the situation I see. Better that way than with more kids  (http://smile.gif)

Heh heh, I'm not quite sure what you were thinking (maybe I don't want to know). And since this has gotten so nicely off topic might as well continue. Yes, I made the choice for two reasons. One, I already had 2 kids (a boy and a girl) which is more than enough. And two, I had just got back from Saudi Arabia after having went though Desert Shield and Desert Storm and I had a fear that if I had another child it might be deformed.

I had several friends who's wives had miscarriages after returning from the desert. I had heard stories of a lot of odd births from those who I served with. I didn't trust the shots or pills that we had to take to counter the possible chemical/bio weapons. And I was in the downwind path of some of the bio plants that were blown up. Basically "better safe than sorry".

Since we are off topic allow me to say:

Damn Void! I am continually impressed by you. Is there nothing you don't know about?  :D

a bit closer to the topic (at least its on topic with the first off-topic subject): I would be worried about security with a wireless network, but i would use encryption across my network.

here's a question: if there is a wireless windows network that doesnt use encryption would it be as simple as getting a wireless network card and a laptop and then sit near the scho.... i mean the windows computer and be able to access the network?

Yes, even easier with open shares.

Been there. Pissed off the computer security guys (it took them months to figure it out.)

Right now, wireless is incredibly insecure. I was in a security conference that just happened to be right next door to a building we had some Cisco wireless units in. The guy brought up his laptop with wireless card, started up his sniffer and we started seeing some of our packets flying by. It was a little embarrassing. That's the "real" reason I am not interested in wireless. I have Cat5 connections all over my house (except the bathroom) so it's not that big of a deal for me.

The gigabit cards I bought were so cheap. Now if only the switches would come down in price.

Are you running gigabit over copper?  I've run a lot of fibre gigabit but the gigabit over copper wasn't available yet. Those fibre switches are very expensive (and fibre is certainly not the cheapest/easiest to run).

What cards are you running and what switches are you looking at?

The Cards:
Information:

Newegg (shopping):

The switch:
http://www.netgear.com/products/prod_details.asp?prodID=141&view= (http://www.netgear.com/products/prod_details.asp?prodID=141&view=)
$100 per port. Way out of my price range!

Looks like the cards perform well under Linux:
http://www.cs.uni.edu/~gray/gig-over-copper/gig-over-copper.html#NetGear%20GA302T|outline (http://www.cs.uni.edu/~gray/gig-over-copper/gig-over-copper.html#NetGear%20GA302T|outline)

I can't believe the price on those cards. Boy times are a changin'. The switch is actually *extremely* cheap compared to what I had to pay for 3com fibre switches. I believe at the time I bought them (probably 3 or 4 years ago) I paid around $10,000US per switch and if I recall they each had 8 fibre ports. But the prices will fall. Have you looked into any other card/switch combos?

I haven't looked around as much as I would have liked to. I have a chem test tomorrow (READ: NEED SLEEP), so I'll talk to you later.

See, not having wireless is not so bad.
