Please no flames!
I must say wow it only took me like two hours to get my ibook running it is way cool all I can say is that it is a little bit diffrent. Ok i have not faced any major problems but I do feel that the mac user comunity is dead when I was using linux everything may not have been incredibly easy but I felt like a member of a comunity. I think that mac users don't help their brethrin out much.
There are other mac users where Iam studieng and they just say that I am not a mac guy they think Im a tinkerer a pc user well I love to tinker whats the point of having something that you do not know how to use fully?
So you maight say that linux people are a bit elitist but what the hell man I was a total novice when I joined but they treated me with rispect then I became a intermediate person but they still helped .
Is it just me but are you the majoroty of mac users just a bunch of novices who only know how to use your macs and never really want to learn more do you really ever ask questions.
All I can say is I didn't buy a mac because of the comunity I baught it because of the os But unless you can prove me wrong I feel like the mac users of this forum in partucular are really cold and just do not have a lust for knowledge. I feel like I'm in my business classroom this is just stuffy and coporate atleast try to prove me wrong
Or I will continue to think that this comunity is full of (shudders) retards
-
No. Generally the mac community is as helpful and embracing as the linux community. However, and maybe its just me, but the majority of linux users here seem anti-mac. In fact, it feels like we are constantly defending our platform of choice. I apologize if i come off as an eltist asshole mac user, it is just a product of constantly being on the defensive.
Of course. I could just be misinterpreting peoples comments and everyone does value the mac users presence here.

I kinda feel the opposite. (Not for you though Ecsyle)

Well Kibi, you are welcome to ask questions here at any time and I'll be much abliged to help, as will Ecyle, Macman, etc.
Also, you may want to check out the Apple forums, at Apple.com. Some great resource, comunity/forum, sites as well, are:
http://www.LowEndMac.com/ (http://www.LowEndMac.com/)
http://www.macslash.com/ (http://www.macslash.com/)
http://www.macnn.com/ (http://www.macnn.com/)
http://www.resexcellence.com/ (http://www.resexcellence.com/) <---slow, but awsome!
http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/ (http://osx.hyperjeff.net/Apps/)
http://apple.slashdot.org/ (http://apple.slashdot.org/)
And that's just off the top of my head :D
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with some jerks, but you will find that with a little looking and politeness, there is plenty of Mac related info, and community. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with, or if these links helped.
Your friendly moderator, Psyjax.
-
Sorry Kiba....
Been away from these forums for a while (actually working ...hard).
But to emphasise what psyjax, Ecsyle und Faust have said, any questions pass 'em this way.
Actually here's an interesting one, if anything because you can access it through sherlock:
sherlock://sherlock.clan-mac.com/channels/macosxhints/SherlockChannel.xml
(this forum puts http:// infront of href's so it don't quite work as it should, just put the above into the safari / Moz address bar)
Actually as a sideline follow this link for more sherlock channels:
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Mac_OS/Internet/Sherlock/Channels/ (http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Mac_OS/Internet/Sherlock/Channels/)
;)

I would help you if I could kiba, but I really don't know that much technical stuff. The lack of help that has been in the Mac Forum lately may be a result of Erudition because I know many Mac users went there.

Well. Maybe its time to open the gates here. This is an anti-ms site. Not a pro linux or pro mac site.
We all have our platform of choice. That isnt why we are here. We are here because of a common view. We dont like ms. Would be nice to stop bickering over who's os is better. Because we all know that anything is better than windows ;) [/derail]

As a Windoze user at home and a part-time Mac user at school, I do feel that the Mac users are less visible than before at Microsuck. But that's mostly because Linux users here seem to be hogging the spotlight. What's worse is that many of them are anti-Mac, too. This is a shame, because the Mac is such a great platform, and I think it should be more endorsed on this forum.
I plan to fully switch to the Mac this summer. It's not easy to justify the purchase, though, because my dad's a peecee guy, and he knows very little about the Mac (I do have the money, but since he's the one who maintains the hardware, I have to convince him that the Mac can be a workable solution).
In the mean time, I can still be a full-time Mac advocate. (http://smile.gif)
-
Wow, there are a lot of people here that don't like Macs? I had no idea.

Don't you think that's a little exaggerated?

Linux users hogging the spot light? If you want more stuff about Apple posted then POST MORE STUFF ABOUT APPLE. I'm not going to stop posting stuff about Linux just because you want Linux users to give you all their attention.
I don't even bother posting here anymore because everytime I do there will be something about "how crap Linux is." Most of my posts are in response to someone asking for help with something to do with Linux. Last time I did that (thread about an Apple user wanting to convert an old PC to a PPC Linux version and asking for help in doing so) the thread got filled with flaming from Apple users suggesting he try BeOS instead of Linux. There isn't any point wasting my time here cos every time someone asks for help with Linux it gets turned into an anti-Linux flaming thread. Last time I was here Jimmy James and you Laukev were the worst for this. Maybe if the posts are a little less extremist, ie "I'm staying away from Linux on PPC because I've decided it's even crapper than Linux on x86 if that's possible" you wouldn't look so "anti-linux"...

Now, now, I didn't mean to start a flame war, OK? Sorry if you misinterpreted the 'hogging the spotlight' statement. I didn't say that Linux users should shut up, I said was that Macs should be more endorsed on the forum; that could mean that 'more Mac users should speak up' or 'more Mac users should come to the forum'.
I hate reviving flame wars, but since you already did, as far as I remember (and I checked to make sure), Duo Maxwell was asking for a free OS, not Linux in particular. Also, neither I nor Jimmy James were the ones who started criticising Linux. We were responding to your attacks (especially Insomnia's) on BeOS, which understandably rather ticked us off.

Yeah Faust, I got my ass ripped from the Mac users over that BeOS thing too. Im here to help linux people and spread the word about linux to those who want an alternative from any other OS. I get talked down to because my OS of choice isnt as mature as theirs, and doesnt have huge amounts of commercial backing. Im not anti-mac, Im anti-asshole-mac-user.

Sorry, but that is the imperssion I get. It just snowballed out of control. Someone says something, someone else takes it the wrong way, then zang, everyone gets on the defensive. I dont know who started this mac vs linux thing, but it needs to stop. The argument never gets anywhere. Even now, i think we are going to start fighting over who's defending their os against whom
I am not trying to attack Linux. I use linux. alot. But i'm a mac user first. So when i feel that my OS is under attack im going to defend it.
-
Let's just say that OS X is technically better at the moment, but Linux gives you more freedom. That seems pretty fair.
-
ahh i was killed
nah. I'm around, but my forum of choice is Erudition
and, I think that's a fair statement. I don't think any OS is freeer or more open than Linux.
but... about the flame wars, it always starts with one of two things... someone takes a stab at Mac OS, usually false information. Be it a mistake, or an outright lie.
Someone says the truth, and from there it blows up.
Or, someone states an opinion re: Linux that is negative, and the flames fly.
I can't talk bad about X11 without being "an asshole"... but... I am, so it's cool.
the problem is this place has a lot of pussies

ok I did not eant to start a flame war but this is rediculus In this post I just wanted someone to prove to me that I was generalising but instead I start a flame war this is weird.
I'm neutral in this because I use both linux and mac os x 10.2.8 Later this year when I have some free time I may even be able experiment with linux on the mac mac os is way cool and so is linux its only a matter of time when the two platforms merge

You know what, you're right. I'll bet all those dudes started dissing Linux back in 1981 when I was born. They said "guys, in a decade or so, some Finnish kid is gonna make Linux... we'd better get a head start on rippin' it a new one!"
Ya, dudes were makin' fun of it before I was born.

Uh... I doubt it. Consider that Mac OS X uses technologies that have existed since 1988. Linux could have been built on similiar concepts and technologies, but it never was. Nothing stopped them from basing early distros on NeXTStep rather than boring, plain UNIX.
Mac OS X already does all the things Linux can. It has a UNIX layer that's BSD-compatible. The BSD utilities are included as part of a default install. OS X has all the advancements brought by the BSD and GNU communities of late, along with the rich legacy of NeXTStep.
Linux distros, while they have an advanced kernel, lack the higher-level stuff that you'll find it OS X

Cool. No one is going to win here. Im going to try and play mediator here and keep the peace. I would like to finish this in some way though. Once and for all. Well, at least for once ;P
Linux heads: Why is Linux a better os.?
Mac heads: Why is OSX a better os?
Give your reasons. you can leave out answers like "Its open source", or "it looks better hurr hurr". From a techincal standpoint, why is your os better? This might turn into quite the flamewar, but i have faith in this strugling community to debate in a civilised manor.
I tried to start posting my reasons for using osx over linux, but all my points were weak and could have been applied to redhat or mandrake as well. :(
So someone else want to light the match, or at least give some insight into why you use what you do?
-
Why are we doing this?
(Heart-warming music starts in the background)
I mean, the only thing binding us together is our mutual hate of Windows! Why not celebrate that instead?
Sure, you may think OS X is just a toy, and you may think Linux is the same as Windows, but come on people! Think about the blue screen of death for a second, or the mystery error messages!
For heaven's sake, think about the children that are growing up right now thinking Windows is the only operating system there is!
(entire MES breaks out in song and complicated dance number, after which they are all friends again)

Oh yeah, in '91 when I was six years old I used to diss Linux all the time on the playground.

I don't know, and I don't care. I have never used a Mac, and know next to nothing about OS X.
However, I do know this: Apple isn't trying to 'jack the web with secret, proprietary protocols that'll only work on OS X. Steve Jobs wasn't paying shills to fill every tech forum with lies and FUD to drive people away from Linux before they ever gave it a chance. Apple doesn't create weird new programming languages and frame-works in an attempt to lock in all developers. Apple hasn't been convicted of anything, nor have I ever heard of them trying to bribe foreign gov'ts to use their stuff. There are Linux apps that'll play QuickTime movies (http://smile.gif) but none that'll play Windows Media File movies  Apple isn't trying to get chip designers to hard-wire the chips so only OS X will run on them.
If Jobs ever tries to pull shit like that, then we'll deal with it.
until then, you like Macs? Use Macs! That doesn't help His Gatesness one bit, (http://tongue.gif) and it sure ain't Win-d'ohs! :D

MPlayer does.
You only have to install all the win codecs before you install MPlayer.
For Xine you have to use some parts from MPlayer.

Not if you install everything from source(recommended).
Problem: Most distro's provide their own packages, in this case, you do have to install all win codecs first.
