Title: Dude this sucks! (how do I ftp?)
Post by: Pissed_Macman on 3 November 2002, 15:06
I'm trying to get a web account that will let me remote link pictures and Calum suggested netfirms, but I cant figure out the stupid thing. After I log in my only options are to upgrade account, change password, domain tools, contact info, promote, free counter, and log out. Where the hell do i build the stupid thing and upload crap??!!

[edit - title edited so it refers to the thread's actual content]

you're not from australia too are you macman?
You use FTP(file transfer protocol) to tranfer files to your netfirms account.

I'm sure there are a lot of pretty FTP clients for Mac OS. That, and I'm pretty sure ncftp is availble for Mac OS!

So you have to have an entirely different program to use ftp? Angelfire and Freeservers are the only webspace providers I've ever used, guys.

okay. i can't remember what ftp client i was using on macOS9, but i found these two: DropFTP (http://download.com.com/3000-2151-2711912.html?tag=lst-0-1) and RBrowserLite (http://download.com.com/3000-2151-10140431.html?tag=lst-0-2).

I haven't used either, but basically it's simple. you just fill in your details, click 'connect' or 'go' or whatever, and then you can drag and drop files and folders into your 25Mb free webspace at netfirms. Also, since they have linux servers, you can also change the permissions of every file and folder in there, so as to keep some stuff hidden from the general populace, if you so choose.

Personally, unless i am transferring multiple files, i don't think graphical ftp clients are any better than just using 'ftp' on a 'command line' although i am not sure if your operating system actually comes with ftp installed, can anybody yay or nay this?

as for how to logon at netfirms, using ftp, i would do this: using ftp (or your GUI ftp client) open/connect to 'macman.netfirms.com' (or if you didn't use macman as your user name then whatever else you used will be the prefix), then when it prompts you for a username, you would put 'macman' (or, again, whatever you chose), then you get prompted for your password. this will be something like FRt67Bg and would have been emailed to you. you can change this password by logging in to your user account at netfirms if you so choose. also, you can get access to some basic statistics info about your site by logging in there too.

sometimes your graphical ftp client will want to know what port to try and connect to. i think this should be 21, but i could be wrong. in any case, leave it blank, as an ftp client will typically try a few ports until it gets the right one.

Hope all that helps, and good luck.

well i found that you need to do ftp://[email protected] (http://ftp://[email protected]) and also, that seems to just give me a 'Directory listing of /', how would one actually upload using a browser?
