Title: If you have any sympathy, you'll help me out
Post by: MasterHacker on 26 March 2002, 19:06
Well, you can tell by my name I thought I knew a helluva lot about computers, but I've used windows all my life  :(
So, does anyone know of a good site, or someone on these forums, that can help me out. It took me 1 hour to do all that history clearing stuff, and I can't find any good sites. Also, any free GOOD OS's? I can't afford a switch right now.

Why ask for a good free OS when you also say that you can't afford to switch right now?

I'm a little confused

when i meant i cant afford to switch, i meant i dont have the MONEY to pay for a switch, which is why i asked for a free one.

as for the sites, i mean to, umm..err, help me unlearn what i have learned about windows etc, plus, i was always a little clueless on comps, so, i just wanna know more. i know some programming languages, i just want to know more about computers in general

Well almost 3 weeks ago I installed SuSE 7.3 Pro ($70.00) and have found that there is a ton to learn but that everyone seams to be willing to help.  As far as sites to learn from.  Start at www.linux.org (http://www.linux.org) or www.google.com (http://www.google.com)

I've read alot of people say they like Mandrake and they seam to like.  I believe you can get a copy from www.download.com (http://www.download.com) (that is a good site!)  I've learned alot from friends online.  I use yahoo messenger alot (installs easy on linux) to talk to a friend I met by looking for online people with interests in Linux.

Also if you are wondering about a good book to read Voidman has talked about a few books under http://forum.fuckmicrosoft.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=000084 (http://forum.fuckmicrosoft.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=000084)

Anyway hope this helps.

well i think you should get linux. you need to download it though if you want it for free. get a big name distro like mandrake, suse, red hat, turbolinux or slackware if you are only used to windows. i have only used turbolinux and red hat so i know little between the different distros.

for linux training, i find that linuxnewbie.org has a lot of good articles, easy to understand for the beginner, and linuxquestions.org/questions is a really good forum where whatever question you have will usually already have been answered in full. Also, try our very own unix/linux forums here at fuckmicrosoft.com. When i got linux, i read through every single back post in that forum, and it helped a lot.

good luck and hope you enjoy whatever alternate OS you go for!
