Title: Trend Chipaway Virus Help
Post by: Windows_SuX_@$$ on 26 September 2003, 01:17
My trend chip away virus says that I have a 'boot Virus'.  I don't know why it does, my Linux is working perfectly and booting very pefectly. It also says 'insert a blank floppy and restart' , I did it nothing happend... any way to get rid of this or turn trend off? I don't think it's a boot virus, but I may be wrong.  I even deleted my partitions and re-installed Linux, but it still said it... I don't know much about this problem help if you can?

I would say boot to DOS with a Windows 98 CD or a Windows 98 bootdisk (http://www.24by7.ca/files/boot98se.exe) and run fdisk /mbr because that will destroy a boot sector virus. However, that will also destroy your Linux boot loader too. You'd have to re-install Linux if you did that.

Oh, and BTW. When you delete a partation you don't touch your MBR(Master Boot Record). So no matter how many times you blow off your partation(s) and no matter what OS you install you will not clean your boot record. You have to clean it manually(by methods like FDISK /MBR ).

Then again, you may not have a virus at all. Your virus scanner may think that the Linux boot-loader is a virus because it tampered with the MBR. Norton AV 2003 doesn't mis-identify a bootloader as a virus.

uninstall it?

it's probably seeing linux there and realized that it's not the windows boot loader so it must be a virus. just turn off the boot sector scanning.

Oh, it isn't detecting the MBR virus in Windows, it is detecting it on boot-up? That means that your BIOS uses the BIOS Trend virus protection(not many boards use Trend's version of the MBR protection). Well, NAV wouldn't change anything then.

Yeah, go into your BIOS setup and disable the BIOS level Virus Scan. You can't un-install it but you certainly can disable it.
