Title: No Power In The East
Post by: Pissed_Macman on 15 August 2003, 08:20
I'm trying not to crack up because I know a lot of bad stuff is going to happen there when the sun goes down, but it's so damn funny because New Yorkers are always saying they wish LA and Seattle would fall into the ocean whenever there's an earthquake.

I'm over in North East Ohio, smack in the middle of the power outage. It really sucked because it was hot yesterday, meaning I no longer had fans. Mine went out around 4:30, then didn't come back until sometime around 10:30. According to the news 3 people died (two in New York and one in Canada) and they don't know what caused the blackout (they've been talking about technical error, fires, lightning, and even government conspiracy). All of the sudden bush's solution to the national energy crisis doesn't seem to be working. Plus he said in his speech that he sees no need to modernize the power grid. Somehow, I don't trust him.

Have they decided how it actually happend yet?

I hear something about the telephone communications between the control centers and powers stations. Was this just a lack of communication or was the system actually down.

If it was fried was M$ to blame, for example Blaster brought down the 311 telephone network in NY earlier that day, no?

interestingly areas where microsoft computers control mission critical parts of the grid were affected by blackouts at times coincidental with the msblast outbreak. areas where BSD and QNX are responsible for mission critical parts were unaffected, as would of course be expected, or at least i have heard it said...

Hmmm, you would hope that mission critical systems would be running on something like QNX and not M$ crap.

But then again if the system failed ultimately because of non-critical systems, i.e the ability to coordinate the working of the grid through a crumby communicatons network, then perhaps M$ will get taken to the cleaners.

MES Headquarters (aka my house) in Parlin (aka Sayreville, home of the ho-hum John Bon Jovi), New Jersey had an outage that lasted all of about five seconds on Thursday afternoon.  We're mainly on the PJM power grid, which serves NJ, PA, Maryland, DC, and some other areas.

Not all NY-area people want California and Seattle to fall off into the ocean; I personally love California and would rather be there.

Seattle, on the other hand . . . (shrug)  And Texas, for that matter . . . let 'em secede, like they've always wanted to.

Plus, we'd be rid of Microsoft.  And Bush.  Then America might actually have a chance of being a real democracy.  You know, like Canada (aka What America Was Supposed To Be).

Oh yes, Canada, a great democracy where the government can pressure private radio stations to take completely harmless radio shows off the air. Yeah...

Let me guess:  Stern fan?

It was a public service.  Stern's sucked for the last few years anyway.  First he becomes a starfucker, then he lets Jackie the Jokeman go, then 9/11 hits and he shows his true, reactionary colors

And this is coming from a former rabid Stern fan, too.  He's become a tired old fuck.  The CRTC was right to put him out of Canadians' misery.

Besides, if Canadians really insist on suffering, they can tune in on the Buffalo (for Toronto), Burlington (for Montreal), or Seattle (for Vancouver) affiliates anyway.

bush is not a real texan

and Texas never really wanted to secede. it was only a country for about 10-20 years and during that time most of them wanted to annex to the US.

We should just give Texas to Mexico, it would fit in nicely, well except for the millions of racist rednecks who hate Mexicans. That could be a drawback.

fuck it. cut them loose and throw them a paddle. oh yes, texas is landlocked, isn't it? welli reckon letting them get on with it would be better for them and for the US. giving texas to mexico would be very interesting though...
