Just ask your questions here, and we will answer them. Keep in mind that we do not support Microsoft operating systems.

The best choice, of course, is Mac OS X, but there are also Linux, FreeBSD, BeOS and many others. Microsoft may have a huge marketshare, but they are not alone, and their stronghold on the market is slowly declining.

Those iBooks (I'm assuming you're talking about the G3 clamshells) were known to have issues and were running Mac OS 8 or 9, which were entirely different than Mac OS X, which like Linux is a UNIX operating system. Apart from the clamshells, Macs were and still are excellent computers, and Mac OS X beats Windows both in stability and ease of use.

Try Mac OS X if you can, you won't regret it.

As for Linux, you certainly can install it on your computer. Most distributions allow you to resize your hard drive to make space for Linux without destroying your Windows partition, if ever you need it for some reason.

You don't need to buy Linux. It's a free operating system. You can download most distributions as iso files.

This thread does not belong in the Windows Operating Systems section. Ryan, please post your threads in the proper sections. I moved your thread about how to make viruses to the Programming section.

I'm not sure if this thread belongs in the Linux section either, so I'm gonna leave it up to another mod to either leave it here or move it.

well, he hasn't exactly recieved a warm welcome, and Uipe came off a little harsh, such as

anyway...
ryan247: i'm assuming you have already gotten in touch with other members here via aim or some chat service, but in case you haven't, i guess we can start giving advice on this thread.

first of all, you can get a linux distro 3 ways: downloaded and burning (if you have DSL or cable modem (or if you are lucky enough with a T line)), buying the medium from a third party vendor, and buying the medium directly from a linux company (like Redhat or Suse).

if you have a fast connection, a cd burner, and cd burning software that will allow you to burn iso images, i suggest you just download it  (http://smile.gif)

if you need help finding the file download for the iso file(s) of a distro just let us know.

when i started about a year ago, i downloaded Redhat 8, and currently use Redhat 9. since redhata doesn't make personal edition anymore, you could try to download Fedora Core 1 if you are interested in this line of distro.

a lot of people also like Mandrake. i think the newest one is 9.2, but i'm sure someone else knows a lot more about mandrake than me. i have 9.2, but i don't like it too much :-/

there are other mainstream distros like Suse, slackware, debain, knoppix, etc. if you already found one and decided on it, than i'm sorry for wasting your time.

as others have said, do not hesitate to ask any questions. we will try to help you as best we can.

oki when I was a newbie I would have been very gratefull if someone pointed me the directions and adviced me not to start installing things without first knowing if my hardware would work fine....
But ryan if the "bitch" was directed to me, tI can tell that those are the first things I tell all my friends before thay even think in installing linux and believe me all of them that didn't follow my advice ended asking to reapair there pc's so I hope that you think a little be before atacking someone that's trying to help you out... if not you should reallllllyyy start going to undernet and enter a linux channel and ask for advices the manner you did and there you would be really flamed!!

And if you are really thinking in installing linux and ready to learn everything about your computer I sugest you download knoppix and than after trying it out and learning how to work in console, than you should trying gentoo in my opinion the best as fastest linux distro  ;)  but thats only my humble opinion...

ryan, i was going to make a joke about how i could put everything you need to know in a zip file and email it to you, but i am not sure you'd take it in good taste. well, i hope that by hanging around you will learn a lot. most of us have i think.

I didn't come to the Linux/UNIX forum, I answered to this thread when it was in the Microsoft Operating Systems thread before it was moved to the Linux/UNIX section.

Besides, the Linux/UNIX is not only for non-proprietary OSes, and even does, in fact, specifically include Mac OS X:

quote:
Ask questions about, and discuss, any *IX type system. This includes GNU, *BSD, MacOSX, Linux, Minix, System V, HP-UX, AIX, Solaris, SunOS, CygWin et cetera.

Okay, I'm seeing... seeing... seeing. No. I don't see you.

BTW, that sentence should look like this...

"That's what he said, so he was. Maybe I did read it wrong. See if I come here anymore!"

We're trying to help you and you keep fucking snapping off like that whenever someone says something. You act like we OWE you something. That we're required somehow to treat you like a god and never talk bad about you. If you were actually *participating in the forum*, you'd know that there's quite a few of us who go at each other every chance we get. It's very rarely personal.

Honestly,
u shoudn't flame at people if u might still need them (even when some of them act like prics).

U wanna start using GNU/Linux?
Good choice!

U better start with something easy...
*buy SuSE 9.0  http://www.suse.de/en/ (http://www.suse.de/en/)
*download Fedora  http://fedora.redhat.com/ (http://fedora.redhat.com/)
or Mandrake 9.2 http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-us/ (http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-us/)

If u don't know how to burn this 3 CDs, just post what software u're using (winoncd, nero...?)

Have fun.

I've never used this 'DeepBurner', so I don't know how it works.

U could download a free trial version of winoncd5:
http://softwareupdates.roxio.com/gm/esd/woc/WinOnCD5TRIAL.exe (http://softwareupdates.roxio.com/gm/esd/woc/WinOnCD5TRIAL.exe)
Once istalled,
*In it's menu, pick "Other".
*Now choose "Track Image"
*Start burning ...

have you got a split personality, ryan4256745376?

first you insult people and say you're not coming back, then you come back and thank them, then when people ask you if you are capable of burning a CD, you make some rude remark about being stupid, and in your very next post you ask for a detailed set of instructions for how to burn a CD. then i think one more quick insult session, and now more thanks.

i don't know what your problem is, but i have rarely seen anyone here with this unusual fragmented approach to social interaction before.

i wonder if you will answer my questions or just post more insults...

edit: and go to http://linuxiso.org (http://linuxiso.org) for full iso downloads and instructions.

Humbleness... yes. That doesn't mean be meek and small, but just try to be a little more polite when you ask for help.

People will be much more apt to assist when you thank them instead of popping off at them because one of the things they said was a bit of a joke.

Get a sense of humor. When someone says one of those jokes, take it in stride.

Also, if someone says something like "you don't seem to know a lot about computers", that doesn't mean they're pointing their finger and saying "YOU'RE A MORON". Don't act like they did.

From the way you've acted, you do in fact seem to have two sides. One is a pompous, rude, thinskinned assclown. The other is a computer newbie who simply needs to learn how to forumulate his sentences a little better.

Yes... another thing, please start forming full sentences.

this isnt a sentence neithre is this i dont kno why u think this is a sentnense i no it isnt one but u will be all mad becos u dont think it maters but it does

We can help you easier if you don't just pour words out. Take the time to formulate a sentence and build it into proper English. Not everyone here uses English as their  first language, and therefore bad English can be impossible for them to understand.

Yes. I am correct again, as I always am. It is the truth. The gospel according to Jimmy James. Send money.

Hey, cut that out. Ryan has come back to the forum, and has done nothing since to deserve your bickering. If this is how you treat newcomers, then I can't imagine any of you being able to make average users (like Ryan), let alone total newbies, switch away from Windows.

And Ryan, you may want to express yourself more clearly, as people seem to have taken offence from some of your posts. And don't escalate flame wars, especially if you're new at a forum, it won't help you.
