Denmark's councils shun Microsoft? it's hardly the end. More like another good start though...
Isn't Linux a danish OS originally btw?
-
Danish OS? LOL!
The fact is that Linus Torvalds is Finnish. But he actually lives in US. However, Linux is truly international endeavor..
-
Finnish, that's right! but isn't he one of the minority of Danish speaking Finns?
Also, yes i know it's truly international, but the original Linux OS that it's all built on, would have been Finnish, agreed? (not Danish, doh!)
-
You could make that case although he wasn't very far along with the kernel before opening it up worldwide. And he immediately wrapped it in GNU/FSF so that part certainly was worldwide code.
-
clever chap, regardless of where he is from! now i think about it, i'm off to look up what he's doing nowadays...
-
> but isn't he one of the minority of Danish speaking Finns?
Calum, your knowledge of geography and linguistics is truly amazing! :D
I would expect something of this sort from someone in US, but in UK (I believe that's where you live, correct me if I am wrong)
Well, you could probably search for something like map of Europe in google... and find out that Finnland is as far from Denmark as whole noth-south length of UK and a tiny bit more. I am not saying there can't be a Finn speaking danish, but it is quite unlikely, there may be perhaps 5 or 10 such people and that could hardly be called a minority. Some Finns speak swedish, Some up north speak norwegian and quite a few speak lapp, a lingo that is closer to chukcha and realted to inuit and Lapps are a distinct ethnic group, herding reindeer in freaking cold of the polar circle. Finish lingo, though is unrelated to germanic scandinavian languages and belongs to ugro-finnish language group (ugro for hungarian), albeit both of them are mutually unintelligible.
End of lesson. (http://smile.gif)

 well that was easily sorted out!
you learn something wrong every day!
and i reckon 5 or 10 danish speakers is DEFINITELY a minority ;) although the likelihood of Mr Torvalds being one of them is understandably slim.
Thanks for putting me straight, you should know, if you are European, though that us Brits are totally ignorant of anything else that goes on in Europe. (actually i am not a Brit by choice, i'd prefer Scotland to be independent of England completely but that's another matter...)
Plus, compared with, say the US, or Canada, or Australia, or Russia, Denmark is practically next door to Finland!
I suppose i should say i was just seeing how long i could fool the Americans! but that would be a lie, i was just ignorant! :D My brain runs Windows 98 you see, memory leaks all over the place!!!
-
> i reckon 5 or 10 danish speakers is DEFINITELY a minority
In my book that would be just a handfull of dudes. (http://smile.gif)
...you should know, if you are European,
Well only formerly, I am living in Great White North, as yanks would put it.
> though that us Brits are totally ignorant of anything else that goes on in Europe.
In my experience, it is not so, I know some Brits and they seem to be better of than what is usual here.
> actually i am not a Brit by choice, i'd prefer Scotland
Ah! That explains it ...so it's just Scotts, perhaps... :D :D
> I suppose i should say i was just seeing how long i could fool the Americans!
Yes, you could, no one would notice. Except me (http://smile.gif)
> My brain runs Windows 98 you see, memory leaks all over the place!!!
Excuses! :D :D
-
a handful IS a minority!!!
and don't get a prejudice against Scots just because of little me!
anyway, i;m happy to be corrected, so thanks for filling me in.... ;)

Hey, don't crack on us Americans and our generally lousy geography. (http://smile.gif) I happen to have been to 12 different European countries and have fond memories of my time in Copenhagen Denmark (blonde, blue eyes, no bras, big boobs (typical American I know)). I spent 3 years in Europe, primarily in Germany (lots of time in Spain too). And I've been to England a few times.
My partner goes to Ireland for a couple of weeks about every two years. He *loves* Kilkenny beer and is his primary reason for going on the 2 week binder. (http://smile.gif)
Speaking of Germany, do you know what the German word for bra is? "keepemfromfloppin"

Uhm I forgot what this topic was about.........oh right .......how M$ will destroy itself with stupid liscences and whatnot.
I am going to guess that we will see more and more of this kind of thing and more and more Linux to replace M$. Not that this is a nail in M$'s coffin, just that this patern will repeat more and more in the comming years.
-
To my knowledge, Torvalds is a Swedish-speaking Finn........pity i cant remember the URL which had that tidbit of info......although any reliable bio or FAQ on Torvalds would probably say the same thing.
OK that's my 2 cents worth

And in regards to the 'beginning of the end' for microsoft...........According to Forbe's magazine Bill Gates has lost a hefty US$6 billion in the last year or so. And with the Shitbox (aka XBox) losing money it looks like Bill's pockets are going to be getting even lighter.

Hey now, this is happy news! A penny not in Gate's hand is a penny well spent!
Anyway, the higher they climb, the harder they fall!
