Title: Welcome to vBulletin!
Post by: CommonSense on 1 February 2005, 09:06
There you go.  See?  It's done.  They said I'd never get around to it, but I showed them.  The forums have been converted.  People began to bitch and whine about three hours after the original UBB forums first went online, some time in 2001, suggesting pretty much every other alternative available.  We ended up (more or less) settling on -- well, disagreeing the least on -- vBulletin.

So, a few things to note:

Anyway, have fun, kids.  Improvements to come.

Yes, you are, since posting was disabled out of the box for several hours.  I've just now fixed that.

Hrmph.  This is going to be definitely be a nightmare to configure at first.  When and if it's all set up, though, it should be nice and smooth.  But expect lots of bugs and weirdness in these first few days.

The incorrect "last visited" date is another weird artifact of importing from UBB.  But I expected lots of weirdness, so I'm not really surprised.  So far, it's actually not QUITE as bad as I feared it would be.

Most of the old messages are screwed up (quotes, blockquotes, etc.) and the template isn't what the UBB template used to be.

I'll be looking into the template.

Can't the old posts be scrubbed somehow?  Or VB taught to parse them correctly?  I'm no longer user #7 :(

BTW, where's 'fast reply?'  I thought that was a feature of VB.

I'm definetly liking the vBulletin! I post on another site (harmony-central.com) that is still using version 2.2.6 and it's screwed up with Firefox. The new version is pretty sweet.

I'm lovin it!! (thats a contraction for "I am loving it" which is an anagram for "Ailing Vomit"

You like it? I was the one who suggested this fine piece of forum software.

Btw, I'm not exactly a huge fan of Maddox :p

The file size limit for attachments needs upped to something more reasonable, like say 100kb at least.

And I'm guessing vBulletin will not have changeable nicks like UBB?  I'm going to have to get another account... with a proper name now.

I vote for 20 messages per page, 10 is just way too small.

Yay! A brand new forum!

And no more of those 'edited by' lines that take up space! :D
Title: MS Formats!
Post by: Aloone_Jonez on 2 February 2005, 02:37
What the fuck MS Paint and Word are accepted "standard" formats and OpenOffice.org isn't!

FUCK THIS SHIT!

Try it your self!

See attached as evidence!

Oh and here's a screen shot of what happens when you try to attach an OpenOffice.org document, vBulletin doesn't have anything to do with Microsoft does it?

If they had any sense they wouldn't do what Windows does and rely on file extentions it should be done the UNIX way!

Edit:
Please tell me you're not using Windows sever 2003 because that would really take the piss!

Don't worry Aloone, this is a Linux server, as always.

Oh...and this theme is about the most bloated thing I've ever seen.  It's like 25% post, 75% shit.  I hope the old MS theme works out.

Then why does it not accept OpenOffice attachents and allow MS Word documents?

Why does it recognise file types by their extention and not their content?

If anything OpenOffice documents should show up as ZIP fromat and be accepted.

PLEASE READ THIS:
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.html

Quote
Don't you just hate receiving Word documents in email messages? Word attachments are annoying, but worse than that, they impede people from switching to free software. Maybe we can stop this practice with a simple collective effort. All we have to do is ask each person who sends us a Word file to reconsider that way of doing things.

Most computer users use Microsoft Word. That is unfortunate for them, since Word is proprietary software, denying its users the freedom to study, change, copy, and redistribute it. And because Microsoft changes the Word file format with each release, its users are locked into a system that compels them to buy each upgrade whether they want a change or not. They may even find, several years from now, that the Word documents they are writing this year can no longer be read with the version of Word they use then.

EDIT:
Come on you all know this, don't you think it's FUCKING STUPID that an anti-Microsoft website accepts MS word documants and rejects the free altranative OpenOffice?

Does anyone else give a FUCK?

Did anyone even take the FUCKING time to read my previous post?

Chill out ;)

I'm currently bug hunting. If it's up to me, no bmp's would even be allowed because of the file size.

Most settings (including the template) are still set default here.

Well I think this is a bug.

bmp's suck they're big and bloated just like MS Office documents, OpenOffice files are zipped so they take up less space.

Well the default settings often suck but allowing bmp and doc attachments is silly are you sure vBullitin isn't anything to do with Microsoft?

Ok I will stop bitching, as there are more important bugs to fix than this.

I like the MS colour scheme, it's funney how something in Microsoft's style is faster and less bloated than something non-Microsoft! :D

There is only one username -- what you use to log in is what appears on your messages.  Some of you may find this mildly embarrassing.

I've noticed you've only made 3 posts, so did you delete your old account and make a new one because you were embarrassed to reveal your old login name. :D

1. The theme.  Gotta see about changing it to User info on the left side of a post and post on the right.

2.  The quick reply box... it's not working. OR at least, you should be able to use it without having to quote soemone.

2. I'll have to ask ComSense.

The quick reply box is functioning the same way it does on every other VB forum I've ever used.

About Word Documents, I see no reason to totally disable them.  .BMPs maybe, since they're totally worthless.

BTW, I still can't change my avatar.

Jesus, are you Free Software fascists done yet?

The people who wrote vBulletin do, unfortunately, seem to be a little more concerned with Windows than I'd like.  The docs keep showing Windows screen shots, even though they're written for both UNIX and Windows.  Maybe that's because Windows "admins" are likely to be considerably dumber than UNIX admins (otherwise they wouldn't be using Windows), but it is annoying, certainly.

I didn't pick the Linux distro on the server.  Hell, I'd rather it be running a *BSD (which, by the way, the mail server is).  But you don't see me bitching and moaning.

Man, I'm glad I have Refalm to absorb most of this whining before I even see it . . .

I have to agree.  Is it SUCH a big deal that vB allows the OPTION for you to upload a file in Ms Word.  OOo can read and export .doc or .pdf files, if it is SOOOOOOO important.

I'm glad it was changed, hopfully it will be easier to change things now, before when someone complained about something it wouldn't change and this proves that this is no longer the case! :)
