Hi All
I want to change to Linux due to a lack of stability in WinXP. I never used any Linux based OS so please don't advice Slackware or this kind of OS(console = unable to use correctly)
And please give me links to the sites so I see the screenshots.
BTW An OS with Desktop if possible :D

LOL. I've been hearing a lot about Mepis (http://www.mepis.org/), how it's really user friendly. Maybe you should give that a try :)
-
I was wondering if Fedora was as easy as Mepis?...
At least is Fedora developped for Home use?

Yes... it's all up to you, but personally, if I was a Linux newbie, I'd go for Mepis, SuSE or Mandrake.
-
Fedora sucks it's slower than Windows XP!
-
I'll throw in Ubuntu.
And yes, we know, Aloone. :D (FC3 is especially slow from my vmware tests)
-
If you want fast, friendly and easy, then why the hell are you thinking aout linux?
download and install BeOS, and try it for a month.

if you want some action, you can download my quake II package on BeShare, or, my KISS Bittorrent package.

Dude, BeOS is better than Linux when it comes down to the desktop.

Is it a GNOME or KDE? Or a BeOS package?
If BeOS is free I will try it  What do you think about SuSE or MandrakeLinux?
---Edit---
Is it a GNOME or KDE? Or a BeOS package? - What Does BeOS have as desktop package.. :)

I never tried SuSE, but I heard great things about it (how easy to use it is, compatibility, etc.)
I did run Mandrakelinux for a year, until I switched to Slackware because of my desire to configure everything myself. I liked Mandrake, it's very easy.

to find out what it looks like- you should do a VNC see topic:
[thread]8826[/thread]
on my machine, i can guide you thru some demos, etc.

To answer the question...BeOS uses its own desktop. It's pretty good, from what tiny bit I've done. (MrX's connection is too slow for vnc :p)
Pretty much all Linux distrobutions include both KDE and Gnome. Ubtuntu only includes Gnome by default though...and starting with v2.8, I declare Gnome better than KDE.

Is BeOS mainly graphical or text based?
Does it load up in text mode than optionally load X and a desktop like Linux?
Or is it like NT where you can only load it in graphics mode?

1. Mainly graphical. More like the text based stuff is all hidden away, like in Mac OS X.
2. Not that I know of. And BeOS doesn't have X. It has it's own graphics stuff that is superior to X in speed and load balancing.
3. I believe so.

isn't a linux based os, a linux os. and belong in the linux section? unless you mean something like linux, but neither linux or based off of linux.
I vote for linux, pick your distro they're all the same once you get used to it. I vote suse.
-
Newbies who are into Linux: I recommend Mandrake, Mepis or SuSE.
-
*cough* shouldn't this be in the linux forum?
and... go with Fedora, Mandrake or SuSe
*cough* you'd think the admin would have the most posts eh?

Yes, this should be in the *NIX/Linux forum. Where have all the moderators gone?
The other admin has a shocking number of posts CommonSense (http://www.microsuck.com/forums/member.php?u=1)

Ah, my privs work now. I can finally move this thread now...

if your a n00b you should probably try SuSE it's Easier than my ex g/f, the first time i ever used linux was with suse it gave me all the skills to move on to other Distro's, For future reference Fedora Core is ok yes it's slow but their's tons of apps out there. try to avoid something like xandros. the only good thing about xandros is cross over so i can run eXeem, which is hardly worht the 90$ you would be paying for it.

I learned a lot from Mandrakelinux when I was new to Linux.
I actually tried SuSE, and it's real easy to use and stuff.

Can we just let BeOS die already? Thanks.
This is coming from an individual who bought the BeOS Bible, r4.5.2, and r5 Pro when they were all new, and evangelized the platform like no one else to his friends.
If you want to believe in its technical superiority, fine -- I still think it's one of the greatest operating systems to have ever existed. If you want to help continue development of it, and hopefully help it reemerge in a new form (http://www.haiku-os.org/learn.php) built from the ground up, great. But please don't recommend BeOS to a newbie who's looking for a realistic alternative to Windows, because in 2005 -- it's just not.

Let's compare:
BeOS
====
Quake II
Heretic
Duke Nukem 3D
Doom
Doom II
ehm...
Linux
=====
Quake III Arena
Quake II
Heretic
Duke Nukem 3D
Doom
Doom II
Doom III
Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament 2004
etc. etc. etc.
Clearly, the Linux platform is superior :p

do newbies only want to play games then? that's like saying everybody who voted for bush is a moron! ah well, maybe that was a bad example...

Not all newbies want to play games, but it's more important than you'd think.
-
maybe my bush example was quite apt after all then...
-
beos is perfectly fine (maybe the best choice)
if you are a n00b because it's one of the easiest OS's to use and learn. i admit its not the best for games (that's why there is Mr X and his 6 BQ2 clan members, to push the developement of open gl hardware drivers) but if you're hardcore like me, its great for games. :beos:
it can easily handle webbrowsing, email, financial managent, typing.
maybe BeOS just is too cool for some people to use, maybe just 'give up' on everything, and be a 'conformist' instead of kewl non-conformists :p :beos: :beos:
so, i dont really care what Giorgi decides to do. linux, beos, even windows 3.1.
dont think different, Be different :beos: :beos:

do you really think BeOS is best for newbies? it's kind of odd that you say you have to be "hardcore" to play games, that doesn't sound like typical newbie behaviour unless i misunderstand your vernacular.
i haven't ever used BeOS and would like to, but since i don't have a spare machine, any spare disk space, or any reliable way to obtain a working copy it has kind of been on the back burner for years* (i actually considered BeOS back in 2001 before i decided on linux, Be going bust was a major factor in this decision).
but i would like to know if you really think BeOS is a good choice for newbies. which newbies is it best for? those who want games, those who want multimedia capabilities etc, i am just interested to know why a "niche" system is good for newbies, traditionally there's a certain threshold where if a system has below a certain number of users, all the users are developers of some sort, or are using the system for a specific function (like a router, or a firewall perhaps)
* same with solaris actually

ok, i'm really neewbie when it comes to this, i want to get Linux, and i'm not really sure how to start, i'm still on Windows XP, so could someone please tell me what i need to know to get started and where i could get Linux

How about word processing - will BeOS run openoffice?
-
Be runs AbiWord. Don't think it runs OpenOffice though.
-
How about spread sheets and drawing programs?
