Title: Should I go (K)ubuntu or SimplyMEPIS?
Post by: edisav on 1 June 2005, 23:55
After using Mandrake for a long time, I find it too buggy and commercialized. So I tried some live versions and decided between K(ubuntu) and MEPIS. Here are my evaluations:

Desktop: Kubuntu was very impressive and much better than Mempis.
HW detection: K(Ubuntu) gave me only a 640*480 resolution and no way to change it, Mepis did much better. K/U didn't see my webcam, Mepis did but I couldn't find an app to test it. Everything else good on both.
Apps: both minimal, good!
Websites: KU seems to be for the people and well supported, Mepis seems to be for the money and didn't find much info.

Now, I'd like to hear from users who use these distros daily. Tell me about support, performance, speed, issues, troubleshooting, updating, packaging, etc.

Thanks.

Use a different driver then - like the one that came with  Mandrake or another distro that supported more than 640x480 on your hardware.

yea, the thing is, that if something works with one distro you can make it work for pretty much any other distrobution of Linux.

The resolution can be fixed. It's a common problem, I think it'll be solved in Breezy Badger release.

The universe/multiverse repositories hae over 16000 packages, so there should be plenty to choose from. It is of course possible to install apps from the outside too.

The Ubuntu community is extremely helpful, not to mention the incredible starter guide (http://ubuntuguide.org).

If you've been using 'Drake, perhaps it's time to consider taking a different course. Install Slackware instead of another "n00b" type distro.
