Post by: luckyp3616 on 22 June 2005, 16:30
My sister uses Microsoft Windows XP(R) to use Microsoft Word 2002(R). She uses Microsoft products, but I want to rid myself of M$ and extend :tux: to all my disk. but how should I go about ridding mysel of what my sister needs for school? I loved :tux:(linux) to begin with.

Please provide more infromation.

Whos computer is it?

What does she use it for apart from word processing?

How much does she know about, computers? Do you think she'll be able to learn Linux easily?

Do you get on well with her?

My advice is don't force things on people, Bill Gates has forced many people to use Windows and if you try to force someone to use Linux then you'll be just as bad.

Golden advice.

You might think...oh "Open Office is just as good as MS Office", but for people who are not into messing with computers, changing to from MS Office to Open Office can be very difficult, frustrating, and traumatic experience.

Non-techie people take a lot longer to get accustomed to software interfaces, and once they do become accustomed to them, changing is extremely diffcult.

A book on it? Is she taking a class on MS office? If she is, do not remove it.

Just another point, I would recommend educating her about open source software in general. Tell her that alternatives to Microsoft software like FireFox and OpenOffice do exist. Let her make her own mind up, you never know she might like OpenOffice and if she doesn't then fair enough but don't bother arguing with her about it. I'm best of friends with my sister and I wouldn't let Microsoft fuck up a good friendship, Bill Gates just isn't worth it. :D

When we got our new computer (my father, bother and I payed an equal share toward it as we're the main users) it came with MS works, I installed OpenOffice, and managed to persuade both my father an brother to use it because I demenonstrated to them how much better it is. I also tried to get them to use FireFox but my dad prefurs IE for some reason but I managed to convert my brother to Opera.

I then set up everyones user accounts as limited and made an administrator account and put the password on display, often people complained because some programs produced the odd error, but I explained to them why it was best to use limited accounts and how to use the run as administrator menu. Now I rarely have any complaints the system runs well and I accept people use different software.

kintaro,
I agree MS Office is better, but that's because it's been developed for much longer and the shear amount of money being invested in it, however it's not anywhere as good value for money as OpenOffice, oh sorry kintaro I forgot you use warez.

I never really used MS Office too much, never needed to, never wanted to. Except in school of course... Fucking bastards.

I mess about in the OpenOffice beta occasionally though. I think it's pretty damn good and it runs very well (but of course it does crash now and again, but that's what betas do. It recovers from them brilliantly too). Taking the ECDL nexy year as part of our transition year course (we have to do it in schoool), so as soon as I can, I'll be telling whoever is over it that I'll not be doing my ECDL exam in MS Office, even IF it was just because Microsoft are evil bastards and I don't wanna support them and I wanna support free software etc etc etc.
They can either let me do it in OpenOffice, or I'll be skipping the ECDL. Easy as pi.

Anyhow, why do you two prefer MS Office to OpenOffice?

Must be the lock-in.
That, or the black-box coding.
:D

Yes, I can answer your question but it isn't as simple as saying "MS Office is better than OpenOffice" or vice versa. To be honest I don't prefer MS Office but it is better than  OpenOffice when you look purely at the balence of features:

I would've added lack of Word Art but I've checked out the OO 2.0 beta and the Fontwork feature is better than Wordart.

However OpenOffice is also better in other ways:

Orethrius,
I see your point but lock-in simply isn't a factor unless you use the advanced features of MS Office, I transfer files between MS and Open Office with out any trouble.

I use MS Office at work and college and OpenOffice at home. OpenOffice offers better value for money as it has the features most people will need and it's free while MS Office cost a lot. OpenOffice is also improving at a faster rate than MS Office which hasn't improved that much since 1997.

I feel it should be brought to the original author's attention that the Justice Department pondered that question for quite some time, and the decision ultimately got thrown out on a technicality.

Not that Sun ever cared much about it.

I didn't know that, but smy point still stands; Star/Open Office hasn'r had the same investment as MS Office and it's a very good piece of software especially when taking this into consideration.

I guess that's why they decided to open-source it.
