I have an ATI Video Wonder VE TV tuner card, and I just assumed it wouldn't work in BSD....but I just found out that there has been a BSD driver for it for a couple of years now!
Woohoo!
Does anyone here have a TV tuner and use it in linux? For anyone here that does, what program do you use to watch TV in linux? THe one for BSD is okay, but I was wondering if there are any alternatives that might be better.

if anyone has a tv tuner that works on beos im willing to trade

I've an AVerMedia on the shared box, but I'm afraid I can't find any Linux drivers for it. :(

Try driverguide.com yet

Yeah, and there are zero usable hits for non-Windows systems.
When I tell it to look for Linux drivers, I get a link to the vendor, and they only offer XP drivers.
Perhaps somebody here has a line on usable Linux drivers?
It's an AVerMedia UltraTV Media Center PCI 500 for future reference.

Any cards based on the bt848 chipset generally work flawlessly in 'alternative' operating systems, and can be obtained for pennies off of eBay. The vanilla Hauppauge WinTV cards would probably be something to look into. I used a WinTV card regularly with BeOS and Linux. I have no idea what the name of the tuner software was though in Linux; it was whatever came with Mandrake five years ago.

Yeah, and by the time the auction ends, it's hit $50 that I don't have, and I've already been burned by non-shippers.
No thanks on eBay unless I know the seller. ;)
That being said, what about LinTV or whatever it's called (V4L I think)?
Is that compatible at all, if not, are there modules available to help transition it?
It's a shared box, and that's really the only thing precluding me from totally switching it to Slackware.

Whatever you do, don't get an ATI TV Wonder. In FreeBSd I have to tweak kernel values to get it to work properly, and in Windows I've allways had little problems with ATI's drivers/apps.

I paid $49.99 at Best Buy for my ATI Video Wonder VE, and I think there was a $10.00 rebate. This was over two years ago. For a used one of these on ebay, I wouldn't bid over $5.

Try MythTV (http://www.mythtv.org/) :)

Thanks Refalm, that might just work with mine as well (we shall see)! :D

For any card you will need to check that there is a V4L(2) driver for it.
I would recommend those using the Brooktree bt848 or 878 (suggestion: Hauppauge) or Phillips SAA7134 (suggestion: Compro) chipsets.
As for frontends tvtime or zapping are cool.
-
Hmmm I saw mythTV but it's written for linux. I googled a bit more and foudn that it works on FreeBSD (http://mythtv.son.org/tiki-index.php) - sorta. It looks REALLY cool.
EDIT: zapping is supported on FreeBSD, and it looks great. I'm defenitely going to try that one. Tvtime does not work on FreeBSD at all.

That's a shame, hell, just write a wrapper for MPLayer :)
-
i use tvtime

I have a TV Card, but I never use it anymore.
I want a chipped TV Card ... one that can pickup sky(cable/sattelite w/e u wanna call it) TV stations :)

I found and kick ass TV program that works on BSD.
xdtv (http://xawdecode.sourceforge.net/)
