I saw in the newspaper that Norton Antivirus 2002 - OEM version is sold. What does OEM version means?

Eh, it's Origanal Equipment Manufacturer. It means it's like packaged to be repackaged. Personally, I don't know why they even mark stuff with this. People think it's like a special feature or something.

It's a special feature all right. If you buy NAV 2002 outright, you'll get a year's worth of live updates. These OEM versions come with 3 months'(?) worth of live updates. After the trial period is up, you'll have to subscribe (more $$$) to continue receiving updates.

Or you could just run Linux and not have to worry about any such terms. OEM? Virus? $$$? What's that?

yeah! my flatmates have both asked me what antivirus software i use (they both have copies of norton, which they paid for, for their windows 2000 and winsow xp machines) and they seemed to have a bit of trouble understanding that i had no need for antivirus software of any kind.

I get the same questions too and I love the expression on their faces when I tell them I don't need any AV software on my machine!   :D

If you ask me, it's confusing for customers who usually never bother to worry about the meaning of acronyms added to the end of products without much major significance -- *cough* XP *cough*

Of course, you can just get around the year-long subscription limitation by uninstalling the Norton software and re-installing it periodically.  (I haven't done this specifically, but I've re-installed Windows enough times, and after re-installing Norton, it always starts over at 365 days worth of free updates)
