Title: Eliminate the need for Windows Media Player for Mac
Post by: bedouin on 18 July 2005, 00:31
Windows Media Player for Mac is awful -- period.  It stalls while streaming, one cannot scan easily through files, it can't play certain WMA streams, and it hasn't been updated in ages.  It seems a third party company has done what MS should have done from the beginning -- simply release a WMV/WMA codec for Quicktime.  Here it is:

http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm

I purchased the $9 player, and it works flawlessly.  Even imbedded WMV and WMA content opens up in Quicktime's plugin.  Download the trial and see for yourself.

Totally ecstatic to be rid of WMP for Mac.

Swell, if you want to continue to support MS's proprietary media formats.  I use Quicktime, mplayer, and VLC.  Anything that won't open in one of those is of no use to me.  Yeah, I miss a few interesting videos (especially since pr0n is all wmv now!), but I consider that to be one of the sacrifices I have to make in order to make my anti-Microsoft beliefs known.

Or.. Just get away and avoid it. When you can. And in this case, you can. It's a small sacrafice.

Microsoft cannot force me to watch their dumb video formats.  I don't have to run and I don't have to hide.  Embracing is the choice of the timid!

I'll vouch for VLC being pretty awesome, but it will not play every Windows Media file.  It will play many of them, but some of them are poorly encoded, and you can hear them, but not see them.  It's surprising how many people can fuck this up, and only WMP knows how to deal with it.

it's because VLC does not have WMV3 support (aka WMV 9 encoded video) and that's the standard on the web these days. I noticed in VLC 0.8.2 , they dropped support for DTS encoded .vob ! >:/

grrr. oh well, I just use 0.7.2
