No more Longhorn. Now we call it Windows Vista. An italian word meaning sight. Well, for us who have seen Windows over the years this should be a sight for very sore eyes.
-
There could be some reasons to keep the code name Longhorn in memory. I read on a site today that vista in latvian means chicken and thus leghorn could be a nickname for this new version of windows since it is wing clipped after all the cutting in the code.
-
The first thing that came to my mind after hearing the new name was Arnold Schwarzenegger saying "Hasta la vista, baby" and shooting a window to pieces.

The last I heard, it was due in December 2006, so we can probably expect to see it ship sometime in the summer of 2008.

I agree. Windows 95 was supposed to come out in 1993 too.
And this Windows Vista thing seems to be a big project for Microsoft too. It's a lot of work making sure that DRM is integrated in every part of Windows.

no. gates & co. no they're losing market share. which is why they've cut things like their spotlight type clone and other "ground breaking" features. xp reloaded failed so they need a reputable update otherwise they'll keep losing market share to os x and linux.
-
One of the features they cut was the WinFS file system wich was supposed to be insainly better the NTFS file system but it would take to long to finalize and stuff so they went with a modified NTFS file system
-
Um......
WinFS IS a modified NTFS filesystem.
-
sorry, i guess i read the article wrong

Hello,
If you wisht to know some more information about winFS file system you can find it on this source
http://www.ntfs.com/
-
Ah, so it's metadeta-based. How, pray tell, is this competition for Reiser? I mean, layering metadata over a system that - by its very nature - needs to be defragmented on a regular basis - versus not putting the files in the wrong physical location in the first place? I'll take functionality over form any day of the week, thanks.
-
I thought they had dropped that WinFS dream long ago. It sounded really wierd... A filesystem that was a relational database... usually I want my filesystems to be filesystems.

:) I imagine:
The terminator is being thrown thru a wall
and then Bill with an evil (grim & evil like) smile
walks thru the broken wall and jumps to attack
but the terminator springs back and comes down with an
iron fist ... bang ...
they ruffle a bit and then Bill manages to insert an
drm-chip-microprocessor into the processor thing (like the one form the T2)
and then the Terminator starts malfunctioning first the legs and
he is crawling towards bill but then he finally crumbles
with his hand still trying to reach for Bill ...
-
And then the terminator reroutes power from his backup battery to his backup un-DMR'd neural-net-CPU, and wakes up. He picks Bill up by the legs ... one leg in each hand and rips the mofo in two, blood spilling everywhere !!! Then he throws Bill's remains into a nearby lava pit :D
