haha, saw this all over the news this morning. ;)
by the way, What would be the average specs on a 4 year olf ibook?
-
That is awesome.

The machines they sold were:
G3/500MHz CPU
320MB RAM
10GB hard drive
CD-ROM
AirPort 802.11b wireless card
ATI Rage 128 (8MB?)
Mac OS X 10.2.8
This machine could run Tiger fairly well (sans special effects), although, you'd have to order the CD media (the Tiger box has a DVD in it).

There were plenty of 500MHz G3 iBooks sold with DVD or DVD/CDRW combo drives.
-
Apple sold them, but the school only bought CD-ROM. They get a discount for that. And the kids don't go burning CDs or watching movies during class. Or whatever. Maybe it was just the money. ;)

That's not a bad deal - I'd cough up the $50. Maybe even get 2 of them. Throw Panther on there, and use it as a wordprocessor/pornlibrary.
-
I don't think I would want a laptop that had been banged around for years by students, but it you got to boot them up first it might be a deal. The displays, hinges and keyboards may be damaged, the batteries may not hold a charge, do you get a battery charger with it?
Finding an OS would be easy. Students get a pretty good discount. My niece in college got me the full box set of Panther new for $85 just after it was released. Comes in handy, too. The full box set has X11, but the restore discs with my eMac didn't.
Worker is right, better buy two or three to be sure you have enough parts. The superdrive to replace the stock cd rom sure won't be cheap, either.
It would have made a lot more sense to have a lottery-type drawing of names from a 'hat' seeing how many people there were.
-
hah...
I was going to try to pick up one, along with about 3 or 4 buddies. I'm glad we didn't take the 3-hour drive down

Wasn't even an option. You had to prove you lived in that county in order to buy one.
Oh, and you could only buy one. One laptop.
-
Only one laptop?
That sucks hard.
Are Apple turning into MS?
-
I think it would have been the store owners call, not Apple's.
-
Ah right, bastard stores.
Although, it's probably a good thing they only sold one per person (or was it different?).
Since that would stop someone buying the whole lot! (I wouldn't mind doing that, Apple Barrage!) :D

These were the rules from the school board. Apple had nothing to do with this sale at all.

We can only hope that more Mac users will get killed by their own stupidity. The gene pool depends on it.

We can only hope that more Macman clones will get killed by their own stupidity. The gene pool depends on it.
Quite right.
