I know I'm just ranting, but still: if you pretend to be a pro, then you should talk like one...

If your not completely retarded, you can still understand his english quite well. English is allowed to be garbled a little, and it maintains readability. If you can't read simple mistakes that is really your problem not his.

Whoa. Isn't GNU/Linux a little better as far as HW compatibility is concerned? I never, NEVER EVER had to download a driver...

Buy a cheap webcam, get it working under Linux, and then report back to me.

Any suggestions? I can't make myself believe him...

Suggestion: he is new to the crowd and hasn't heard of PAN yet (which is pretty cool), I don't know where the development is at these days as my ISP doesn't do newsgroups like my old one. But the best p2p is gtk-gnutella as far as I am concerned. It runs fast and it is full of stuff.

A computer science student who doesn't know what gui stands for?  Classmates who ooh and aah over OpenOffice?  Kernel is an acronym?   What fucking planet is this guy from?  I'm all about Linux, but this kid is a bit scary.

His sanity line just expired.

You're the retarded ones, he said Kernal not kernel.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernal
Quote
the word KERNAL is an acronym (or maybe more likely, a backronym) standing for Keyboard Entry Read, Network, And Link, which in fact makes good sense considering its role.

I was going to point that out but I enjoyed seeing stupid people assume clever people as stupid.

Fuck, who are the real dyslexics on this forum? Worker can't read for shit!

As Wikipedia says, it's most probably a backronym (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backronym).
Anyway, I'm quite sure he meant KERNEL, not Kernal:
Quote from: Wikipedia
The KERNAL is Commodore's name for the ROM resident operating system core
Quote
There's also, however, a theory that the word originated as a misspelling of the word "kernel"
Quote
The (completely different) OS core in the 16/32-bit Amiga series was called the Amiga ROM Kernel, i.e. using the correct spelling of kernel.

And BTW:
Quote
A backronym is the phenomenon that the short word exists first and is then expanded to a phrase.

You might also want it pointed out, he didn't just say KERNAL, he also said what it stood for, which makes it highly unlikely he meant Kernel.

OK, I just searched the article, and he did NOT use the word kernal at all, save here, in the daily notes section:

He probably heard the KERNAL story, and assumed it meant the core of any operating system, not just a Commodore thing, and therefore mistakenly applied it to the Linux kernel.  That's a pretty big mistake for a "published" author, and a pretty big mistake for a computer science student as well.

I went for 8 months without ANY MICROSOFT software (yes, only using Linux) ;), 10 days is nothing at all.

Sympathise with the poor soul. He is completely dependant on a single company. BTW I've been on a non-MS diet for almost a month now.

The Computing Dictionary (http://computing-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/kernal) doesn't say anything but "kernal - kernel", the latter being a link (I suppose to the definition of kernel). The interesting part, the ads:

The "Kernel" shipped with Onyx2 (SGI) is also called Kernal, or something. I think that means that Commodore arn't alone.

Why do you defend this guy like he's Jesus or something?  Just another luser who tried out Linux - happens everyday.

Its not about defending him. It's about making you sound bad.
