It seems to me there is an error when you try to install iTunes 5 through System Update.
Comes up with this annoying thing:

Just to for-warn people. :) You should download iTunes 5 manually form http://www.apple.com/itunes

Screw that. They've sent us a dodgey installer.
Even if you download from the Apple Site, it does the same thing:

Hope they'll fix it...

Have you tried closing iTunes first?
:D
I was going to update this weekend, hopefully I have better luck than you do.

Yes. Funny. ............
I dunno, I was just wondering if it was just my mac playing up or some dodgey software.

I did the install on both Mac and Windows, and found it shoddy. I had QT 7.0.1 installed on Windows, and I killed the QT installer before it started. iTunes wouldn't start, citing that it needed QT7 to run.
But I have 7.0.1. It's not asking for 7.0.2, just 7. But then, this whole wierd obsession they have with tying an iTunes release with a corresponding QT release is creepy.

Brought my computer into the office on Sunday and was able to get both Quicktime and iTunes updates with no hassles. So there.

mine would stop downloading when i did it through software update

***Solution***
(For Mac)

More gloating: my flawless update was performed in 10.3.9 on a G3 iBook. Safari, iTunes, and Quicktime are all working perfectly.
When I first turned on the computer, it was connected to a random wireless network in the building, and wouldn't connect to software update. But once I plugged in the network cable, things were fine.

I updated my iBook last night with out a single error. In fact, in the years since I started using OSX, I haven't had a problem with software update. At all.
What the hell are you guys doing to make your macs suck so bad?

Installing shareware like Pacifist? :D

Maybe they've fixed it now. *shrugs*

As a failsafe you should scan drive permissions before doing system updates. That'll save you from encountering some pesky problems while updating.
