Title: New Office for Windows

Somebody at a swedish mac forum said this looks like it was made by people with no taste. I agree. It looks rather messy and as if they were trying to put glamour into the design but instead it looks tacky.

doesn't look bad at all... why "12" though? Also why does it need it's own skin?

There's hardly any room for the document itself! :o

I agree and who's going buy this anyway?

In my opinion office software has been over featured for many years, we're still content with MS Office 97 at work so I can't see us upgrading to this shit.

I agree also.  There wasn't much difference between office 97 and 2000, so there was little reason to replace office 97 with 2000.  Office XP was a big step backwards and is frustrating to use.  This looks even worse.

But of course, MS is changing the document format again.

Network problem

You tried to access the address http://pdc.xbetas.com.nyud.net:8090/?page=o12preview1, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.
Make sure your Internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection are working.
Check that the setup of any Internet security software is correct and does not interfere with ordinary Web browsing.
If you are behind a firewall on a Local Area Network and think this may be causing problems, talk to your systems administrator.
Try pressing the F12 key on your keyboard and disabling proxy servers, unless you know that you are required to use a proxy to connect to the Internet. Reload the page.

worked fine for the rest of us i think.

and as for the software.. i dont know how well it performs as an application, but the interface sucks ass.  i mean who the hell wants half their screen cluttered with buttons and switches?  ok, maybe i'm being a little too exaggerative here, but why the hell is the toolbar(s) so thick??
i wont even bother downloading a demo (if they offer one) for this one.  i'll just stick with wordperfect and abiword.

You may be able to reduce the menu sizes.

It will be easier than popup menus because those are too fiddly on larger monitors.

I right click anyway.

I would be interested to see how companies react to the new interface, they could start using OpenOffice.

I do all my typing in a program not much more complex than notepad.

Then I format/spell check it.

I find this twice as productive, all the fancy buttons and the autoformating is a pain in the ass and if you do it afterwards you'll do it twice as fast because you don't waste as much time mucking around while you're typing it.

Sounds reasonable. I really hate the autoformatting crap.

Vim 7 is going to include a spellings checker. If it's out, you're going to be thrilled, I'm sure of it :)

I agree the new beta office is terrible, the colour scheme for me is bad and the over done amount of buttons makes it look simply ugly.

Thats one ass ugly interface, and Im sure what ever comes out will be bloated and buggy as hell. It really bummed me out when WP and Lotus allowed themselves to become irrelevent. I think WP 6x and lotus are still better than anything M$ has put out.
Im sure this new version of office is going to take up even more HD space and be a bigger pain in the ass than Oriffice 2003. I prefer Open Office. Hopefully it will continue to improve.

Office 2000 is pretty good, I reckon that's the best Office version to date, just like Windows 2000 is the best Windows OS to date. ;)

I think WP and Lotus were the best products of their class.

Word Perfect did in fact rock.  And Quattro, Corel's spreadsheet, was light years ahead of Excel.  Ah, the good old days.
