Title: Gates describes Blu-Ray DRM as "Anti-Consumer"
Post by: TB on 18 October 2005, 10:21
http://www.betanews.com/article/Gates_Bluray_DRM_is_AntiConsumer/1129572265

Wow......Bill Gates for once gives a flying fuck about consumer rights - but only because his financial interests are at stake. It's hardly surprising - Intel & Microsoft have decided to support the (IMO) inferior HD DVD format, and it hasn't taken long for them to start slagging off blu-ray. And either I'm imagining things, but I thought that content providers were pissed off that the DVD format's copy protection is, for lack of a better term, a joke. So blu-ray would be rather attractive to content providers from that point of view.

(EDIT: And it is just a teeny bit ironic that Bill expects us to bend over and accept HIS DRM, but someone else's is just plain evil. How the hell do people get away with such hypocrisy????)

Yeah, it's stupid. But only until someone cracks HIS drm in the consumer interest, and he calls them evil.

Because people generally don't give a crap about such things whenever they're out to buy something / etc.

It's terrible.

Well, I read the article, and it seems to be Bill just saying more nothing to support his product.

However, this doesn't change the fact that Blu-ray must ******* die.  When Sony put the self-destruct sequence in the player spec, Blu-ray became totally evil.

It's a fucking waste and an environmental nightmare, too.

This time Bill Gates is going with the right stuff.  Oh I'm sure he has his own reasons, but Blu-Ray is evil.

it doesnt matter which one is best, its allways the one microbastards support that become a "standard". they offer out the box supports for their fav one and windows suckups will use it cause its easier. doesnt matter how good or crap it is. if they only suppoerted AMD processors, intel would only be used by linux users and people arsed to write windows drivers and make it work.

Forget what Billy has to say about it... DRM is in and of itself evil, and the new shiz is becoming downright satanic.

Now to think about it, the right choice is probably C:  None of the above.  Maybe it's time to say to hell with both new formats (but especially the blu-ray).

I don't care much for them, the change in storage space doesn't seem enough.

DVD's replaced videos, HDDVD and Blueray are good for HD tvs but you can't backup your hard drive on them. And who owns a HD tv?

Games need more storage tho. Hell, debian will fit onto a single disc :D .

Yeah, because he was addicted to meth and dying from syphilis. Learned that from the History Channel.

Not enough change in storage?
CD-'bout 1GB max
DVD- 'bout 9.5GB max
HD DVD- 30GB max
Blu-ray- 50GB max
So a change of 20.5GB min isn't enough? And why can't you back up your hard drive on 50GB? Just how much stuff do you have on your comp?
I agree though the DRM will suck. No one thinks of the pirates any more.

Backing up 50GB at 2x speed. Now that's a punishment fit for gates,

That is seriously, extremely perverse. I'm impressed. What about at 1x? On Windows box, that's been relly badly configured and keeps crashing? No, that is too much, we just want punisment for his crimes aganist geeks everywhere, we don't want to touture him.

Of course not.  If we wanted to torture him, we'd connect the play reel of a PDP-10 to a rope attached to his penis, and hang him upside-down off the Empire State Building by it.

 Ouch!!!

Anyway. Is there any hope that this whole world domination "trusted computing" and copy-protectionism will have a happy ending?

Add a "Are you sure ...?" query every 30 seconds or so - each one pausing the backup.

I believe that 2x is the maximum speed of a blu-ray disc.

On second thought, MS should use blu-ray. It's fitting, plus if all the windows users had to do that, they wouldn't have time to make fun of *nix users. I'm sick of hearing, "OMG MAC USER!!1 YUO DON;T HAVE T3H PROGRAMZZZZZZZZORZ111111"

It's either that or something about one button mice, which aren't even used anymore.

1.  You forgot the huge change between floppies and CD-ROM.  1.38MB (not 1.44, check sometime) vs. 700MB.

2.  I have around 93GB total storage (80GB + 20GB - HD manufacturer bullshitting), and only 3GB free.  So...I got lots of stuff.

I believe I read somewhere that TDK developed a 100GB Blu-Ray disc......with a whopping four recording layers.

That does seem to make sense. But don't you dare do it without me. If all the CD's are destroyed in the process - mission accomplished 186 %
