I found this article. BTW whats with the Gardner group.
http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=2026
(Column) - The Linux community was left stunned when Windows Server software (http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=2026#) outsold Linux in the server market. Gartner, Inc. recently reported that sales of Windows systems accounted for nearly 37 percent of all server revenue in the last quarter while Linux accounted for 31.7 percent. Windows has a 5+ percent lead over Linux, which should be the cause for celebration at Microsoft.
Is this the downfall or, as they say, the beginning of the end of Linux? Most definitely not. Before the folks at Redmond rejoice too much, there are some things they need to consider.
First, the study says that Windows based Servers accounted for 37 percent in revenue. Now traditionally, Windows based systems are more expensive than Linux based systems, so even if vendors sold lesser number of Windows systems, the price difference could ensure that Windows sales revenue was higher. This implies that, in terms of pure numbers, Linux could very well have outsold Windows.
The research unfortunately only refers to the sales revenue rather than overall profits and market share. Like the Xbox, Microsoft could be under selling the product just to hold on to its market share, and with such deep pockets, I wouldn

Idiots who pay attention to marketing bullshit deserve what they get.
Linux is never going away, because somebody is always going to find it kinda fun to develop kernels and software, whether you buy them or not.
-
I think M$ is playing tricks again ... like usual, I don't believe a thing they say ... Linux will never die ... NEVER !!!! We won't let it die ... I won't at least :D
-
WTF is the Gartner group. Do they perform oral copulation on bill gates and steve ballmer?

End of story. Moving right along...

I also find it interesting how Gartner so willingly writes off that "other 31.3%" of revenue. So because they're running UNIX, Solaris, HP-UX, Be, et al - they don't count? Excuse me, but WHAT. THE. FUCK?

But in the real world 30% is like ... nothing...
Maybe every one was waiting for the initial surges of security updates and service packs to calm down...
provided the method is secure enough
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA

Recent rumors claimed that Microsoft wanted to giveaway its OS for free by integrating advertisements in the OS itself. If that happens (provided the method is secure enough), I don’t know what the figures would be in terms of revenue, but Windows will most definitely "outsell" Linux in sheer numbers and that could perhaps be touted as the beginning of the end of Linux.
This raises an interesting question. What would happen if you'd block the advertisement in the OS's own hosts file?

i will use "*FREE*" UNIX BASED SERVER !
i do not care about the prise and marketing stuff connected with M$'s WINDOW$

any commercial anything can out sell any free anything. free software doesn't sell.

Don't forget that only home users and hackerly sysadmins use free Linux. Most corporate server applications use Red Hat Enterprise, or SuSE or something like that, which does in fact cost a lot of money.
-
True-but you get what you pay for with RH enterprise, and SuSe. You pay a lot of money for M$ and you get nothing but a fully loaded piece of shit.

Linux is not doomed you fucking moron. But it is nice to see it is leaving the public sector. I really hope for Linux to become as unpopular as possible for its development to still continue, I hate idiots ruining Linux with their user freindly bullshit.
Linux was cool about 5 years ago, its beginning to really piss me off that everyone knows what it is (or at least they think they do but they have no fucking idea).
HORRAH.

Oh well, at least you can still impress them by opening the terminal and doing stuff 100 times faster than when working in X.

Or you can use X and have 346345645 terminals on a billion workspaces (Windows third party software to give you X style workspace still sucks because Windows wasn't designed for it. I have tried shitloads different ones for my Windows XP machine and they still all suck cock compared to what Gnome, XFCE, Windowmaker, and nearly every other X desktop has).

Im not a fucking moron, you sheep fucking piece of shit. Dont call me a fucking moron. Asshole!:fu:
I didnt write the article asshole. I just relayed the information. Im glad Linux is in the public sector. Its gotten better because of it. Im pretty sure their are Linux distro's for elitist stuck up assholes who are a legend in their own mind who are wannabe intellectuals. I hate idiots like you who are always starting shit with other people. Im glad Linux is user friendly. Competition leads to innovation and innovation leads to better things.

I think Linux should be used in homes. A lot of home users who use XP, but have no interest in gaming or anything that NEEDS Windows are missing out. We had some live Linux distro's in college as an intro to Linux and a few other students started asking about it and where they can get it because it is so simple to use. Out of the whole class, I was the only one who had even seen the kernel booting, yet no one had any problems with it.

I usaully dont flame. I dont like being reffered to as a "fucking moron." Ill apologize in public if Kintaro wasnt reffering to me.
I apologize to rest of the group for that.

No user friendlyness leads to lack of innovation and a million attempts to create desktops that do what all the other "user friendly ones did".
And you titled this thread as "Linux is Doomed". Your the one who made a retarded assumption.

The Gardner Group have been MS suck-ups from day one. Depend on them to publish the results of the latest MS sponsored "research" that "demonstrates" that Win-d'ohs does this or that better than Open Source. Doesn't mean a thing.
Furthermore, if this does come to pass, then the state of the art will be set back by at least thirty years. All your soft will be prohibitively expensive, won't work right, and computers won't be worth using.

Yeah, but there's still Slackware. :D Still, "n00b" distros have their place, and having more folks out there at least trying it is a good thing, in that more users will help prevent the total 'jacking of the entire 'Net. More users also means more HW manufacturers will consider providing drivers for Linux.
-
I love seeing the kernel logging on startup, its nice to see that something is happening and what the kernels waiting for.
Yeah as linux gets more popular hardware support and funding will follow.

Linux is doomed.

Now you know why I flamed him.:fu:
I don't accept your apology in advance before recieving it. I don't need an apology, I don't give shit. Your a moron.

kintaro you're a moron for triple posting and not being tactful.
dmcfarland,
You shouldn't let kintaro upset you, he's just speaking his mind (yes I know he should've been more tactful but it isn't his style). I agree with him, the notion that Linux is doomed because of MS is retarded.
-

Moron.

This thread is really going downhill. If there is any more mindless flaming, I am binning this.
Kintaro, do not use personal attacks against other members. Yes, calling them a moron is a personal attack, just stick with discussing the issue.
-
Then ill speak my mind when Kintaro speaks his and let him know what I think of him. Dont accuse of flaming someone the next time he leaves an ahole response.
Hahaha ... good one ! :D
-
Thanks
Just for the record I dont go around flaming people, and I didnt start it.

I was speaking to everyone. Do not flame, do not feed trolls... you get the idea. I am not trying to blame people, so let's just move on.
Does this article account for the fact Linux does not necessarily cost anything? Or people who buy machines that come with windows only to be wiped and reinstalled with a free operating system? Unless we have real details, I sense bias.
-
It's kind of obvious that the very fact that most computers (laptops especially) come with Window$ pre-installed, whether you want it or not, is monopolistic in nature. If I don't want Window$ on my laptop, the only thing I can do is buy a mac. I know there are some cheap laptops that come with Linux installed, but I want power, not cheapness, price is not important, especially when considering electronic equipment of any kind, you'll be better off getting the best, but not the cheapest hardware, and not the most expensive either.
Ok, so, my point is you should have a choice as to whether you want an OS pre-installed on a laptop or factory-built PC. Say, is it possible or at least not too difficult to build your own laptop ? I know, the pieces inside are quite small, easy to break, and easy to misplace, but maybe there is a way ?
-
Actaully I love Linux, and I hate Windows and other M$ products. I just pasted the article into the post so people wouldnt have to go all over the place to find it.
M$'s is arguing that linux cost nothing to obtain, buts costs an organization in terms of maintenance, repair, and keeping it updated. They are trying to say that linux cost money of terms of man hours and down time.
Theres another post that has an link for the interview with the person that did the study. You can find that interview on http://www.slashdot.org
I dont believe that for a minute, because I worked as a tech in a linux shop. The only downtime we had with our servers was when a motherboard or a power supply went out, or when we had to upgrade stuff like memory. Of course the article is bias, BUT I AM NOT.
I can say from personal expereince that linux is easier to maintain, and its not hard to keep updated if the admins know what they are doing.
I dont appreciate anyone trying to paint me to be some shill for Microsoft, because Im not. I've spent the majority of my time as an IT person fixing and rebooting Windows machines, and know just how f'ed up WIndow$ is.
So thats it. Im not a M$ $hill.

Actually I dont believe the article. I posted for everyone perousal. I know its bullshit

Fine. I am glad we got that out of the way, as we know people like that have yet to post in this thread.
There may be some validity of Linux seeming to have a higher TCO if you have to retrain your entire IT staff and rework everything they do in order to switch to Linux, but I would say in the long it works better to not lock yourself into one vender, especially a monopolistic one.
-
Linux has a higher TCO but a lot more reliability as a server. Thats why big companies that can afford it use it. Linux is better, of course its going to cost more.
-
Linux has a higher TCO
How do you know?
Linux is better, of course its going to cost more.
Eh, that makes no sense.
-
How do you know?
There is more demands for Linux admins, and they cost more to hire. On top of this there are more than just Microsoft studies supporting this.
Linux is more complex to operate than Windows. Linux administrators typically need more experience and training to do their job effectively. Also most companies that provide support for their Linux distributions charge more than Microsoft or third party companies that provide the same support for Windows.
-
You get what you pay for when you hire a MCSE, and thats crap. Linux admins are not cheap but they know whats to do and how to do it. That=longer uptime, and less manhours, so it balances out.
A monkey can become a MCSE.
-
They don't give a shit if your an MCSE. They care about experience with past jobs.
Besides, some things on Windows I find personally, are way more difficult. I could never work out how to set up IIS 6.0 with dummy SSL cert, so if you want to secure site for simple personal reasons you would need to shell out hundreds to a CA.
Apache on the other hand has a great source of online documentation and its really easy to configure. Any monkey that can read can set it up. However their are things a monkey cannot do well, such as general Linux system maintainence. Sure you see a lot of monkeys running their own home webservers on their broadband/ADSL connections, but a lot of them go down time and time again.
-
Im not a MCSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont give a shit about you period.

I wasn't saying you were, im saying that hypothetically.
Does the concept of using that type of context to explain something in english speech baffle you? Because it is quite common usage. I was starting to change my mind, but no, your a retard.
