Apparently AtheOS has been forked, which is good because AtheOS is pretty much DEAD.  

This looks pretty good for a 0.x version.

It looks very promising... I remember AtheOS too... huh... never tried it though, perhaps when I get some time I'll try Syllable 0.6

I've never heard of it but what does it have that Linux, Mac OS or even Windows doesn't have?

There's quite a few OSes like this (haiku off the top of my head). I like to see them. Better than a GNU/Linux distribution, the developers write basically everything themselves so it's usually integrated (good and bad, good and bad).

They're just making an OS that's fast and easy to use, and they're doing it their way.

Maybe so but I was being sarcastic, I can't see how an OS that has poor  and relies on heavily emulation can be fast.

The two are kinda intertwined and almost ubiquitous in "Not Qutie Mainstream OSes" ... they need more emulation because they have less compatibility, that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be really slow, but it's probably gonna be slower than non having to use emulation.

I don't think the OS itself relies on emulation, I think some of their applications do.

Wow, I was unaware that Syllable had switched from a Linux backend and Be frontend to just using VPC to handle everything.  Then again, it might just be a misunderstanding over poorly chosen words.  ;)

I tried the latest version 0.6.2.  Stability has improved significantly.  

I just wish they had better ethernet hardware support.

Syllable is up to 0.64.  It's much more stable and has far better hardware support, including better ethernet hardware support.  

It's feeling a bit pokey though... not sure if that's just the live CD factor kicking in.  

You all might want to give it a shot.

I think it would run on an Intel mac (they can run other PC operating systems).  Syllable is available as live CD (like Knoppix) so you can try without risk and it's only 160 MB download.

Installed it on VMware and it boots to a blank screen. If they can't support VMware they're not even trying.
