And let's not forget that it obsoletes otherwise perfectly good systems. I have a Dell Dimension from 1996 that runs Slack (with KDE no less) with 64MB RAM, a P-I, and two HDs: 1.5GB and 2.0GB.

No way you could run XP on that. If you're not doing heavy number crunching, this ssytem is still quite serviceable for doing most of what most people use PCs for anyway.

* crappy, unfriendly installer with a crappy, unfriendly partitioner (would it be so hard to tell us the partition type like every other partitioner in the world?)

Why does a winter audience delay macintosh? The maker tosses macintosh. Beneath female suffers a double scum. How will a rat cube the heavier cricket? Macintosh calls a method. Can macintosh nest opposite the headache? Macintosh ties the wrong fairy. When can macintosh stem the land gang? Female aborts underneath macintosh. Inside macintosh waffles female. I tried to install fucking windows 2000 and the son of a bitch decided to (a) fuck up the bootable flag on the hdd and (b) delete GRUB, all just before it realized the harddrive's in too bad of a condition to install.

You'd think it would check BEFORE it fucks shit up.

So I had to spend some time in the Ubuntu livecd fixing it, damn I love that livecd.

btw, ubuntu's running pretty much perfect on this "shitty" drive.

Well you could always run a live CD if your HDD fails ... and upload all your files to Gmail like I do, or some other online storage places. Or you could buy a new HDD or dumpster dive for one or get one from an old Xbox (like me)

[offtopic]Do you use gmailfs? Looks like it could be useful to you..

I backed my important stuff up to an external hdd before restoring the MBR, but everything's going fine now anyhow.[/offtopic]

[offtopic] hmmm ... gmailfs, never heard of it

I just looked it up. Looks very interesting and quite possibly very useful. Unfortunately it's still alpha ... wouldn't trust it with anything too important.[/offtopic]

I don't have this problem because I don't use a shitty memory resident AV  program.

You wouldn't believe how many viruses you get watching pr0n on Window$. In fact while surfing with FF on Linux I once got a message saying something like:

"Error: Drive C: not found"

I'm betting it was trying to put a virus on drive C:, muhahahaah, there is no drive C: bitches !!!

I do a scan every month or so and so far I haven't had a single virus. :p I use a limited account and Opera, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, and Media Player Classic  and Real Player for watching porn.

* The shit OS randomly goes berserk on the file system and leaves BIIIG BIG empty holes ...

* Then in XP they fucked up the only two saving programs that are essential
Scandisk and Defrag !
now you can not even fix shit !
[poo]

[edit:and another thing:]

* Why in the seventh layer of hell ... my gov thought it will be a good idea to BUY (yes BUY not ripoff but BUY) all 1000+ copyes of window$ so that they can then BUY office packets for the people to use at work when they can easyly work with open oses/software that are more secure and less prone to idiot atacks(like when the owner is an idiot)

My main problem  with Windows is the Genuine advantage shit, I also hate the way it's hard to customise and you can't easilly remove Internet Explorer.

On other forums, this dude decided to piss on Ubuntu. That's fine, except he uses Windows. Windows!

So yea, this list helped me get this response out, and there's a little new stuff in it too:
Quote
Quote from: deusexaethera
I installed Ubuntu a couple of times. It was infuriating having to "sudo" all of the commands that I needed to execute under the Root account. They shouldn't have blocked that account from being used directly.

It also would have been nice if my Postscript printer driver had worked. Not worked properly, worked at all.
But did you like the text editor/s (gedit)? Did you like the image manipulation program (the gimp)? Did you like the office suite (OpenOffice.org)? Did you like the web browser (firefox)? Did you like the IM program (gaim)? Did you like the many cool and useful GNOME panel applets? Did you like the document viewer (evince - for viewing PDFs, Postscript, DjVu and whatever DVI is documents)? Did you like the native support for NFS, SMB, FTP, SSH, and WebDav shares? Did you like the email client (Evolution)? Did you like the BitTorrent client? Did you like the support for so many more compressed archives? Did you like the friendly Take Screenshot program? The Dictionary? The actaully-not-bad games? The photo management program? The scanning software (XSane)? The backup system (Keep)? Being able to start new graphical logins from within a window (gdmflexiserver, of course it's accessible via the GUI)? That you don't have to resort to a Run box to configure which servers start at boot (msconfig, blow me)?

Did you like the fact that it's all free software? That it's not developed by a convicted monopolist? That it doesn't have any copy-protection bullshit and doesn't spy on it's users (WGA, what a useful program!)? That it has a sometimes-invaluable command line interface, with programs such as sed, awk and grep? That it supports all types of useful filesystems? That it's polite enough to ask before overwriting the MBR (and not with a shitty boot loader either - only the best bootloader on the planet period)? That it doesn't ship with a theme that looks like it was designed by Fisher Price? That the installer isn't an unfriendly piece of shit (as well as the partitioner, would it be so hard to tell us the partition type like every other partitioner in the fcking world!?)? That the installer is on a very usable graphical livecd? That it runs on PPC-based machines (i.e. millions of those old macs)? That the Applications menu is actually organized (what genius usability expert did MS pay to decide not to organize it properly?)?

All this, and:

   1. It's free as in freedom.
   2. It's free as in price.
   3. It fits on one CD.

Does Windows have ANYTHING other than industry support? Except Paint, that is.
