"There has been lots of debate in the past few days over Microsoft's plan to make the startup sound in Windows Vista something that can't be specifically silenced by changing the sound settings in the control panel. Users would be able to avoid hearing it by manually turning down the speaker volume, but then they would have to turn that volume back up to hear anything else."

The idea here (to both paraphrase Steve, and pass along the goals here that I learned) is that Windows Vista should present a common, and beautiful, face to the world. I could go more into it (I think what they are trying to do will be apparent in the shipping release, but isn

Cool ... the more they restrict their users the better. (In previous Window$ versions one can just delete the WINDOW$/Media folder to get rid of the sounds ... hopefully they won't allow that either) I further hope they automatically set your sound level to the maximum possible so all can hear the call of Window$ ... much like they do in classrooms here (I love to go in there and turn the volume all the way up ... heheheheheh)

Actually, I kinda like it.  Now I can decide who to run vicious hack-attacks against just by listening.

Besides taking choice away from the user it also means that in places or sitiations that require silence (librarys, early in the morning, etc) you cannot silence your laptop, or possibly your speakers don't have volume controls etc. Basically you cannot silence your computer when needed.

I hope it's a lovely tune...We will all be hearing it a lot very soon.

am i missing something? you just delete "The Microsoft Sound.wav" don't you? are we seriously proposing that the owners of a software system actually cannot decide what to do with the files that make up that system? if i pay money for a system (or if i don't, as is the case with fedora, my current OS), then i expect to have administrative rights on it, otherwise how can i maximise disk space, file my files, install and configure software and scripts etc? i can't imagine being the owner of a system and not being able to delete a file in that system when logged on as root. is this really what microsoft is selling to people? and they will buy it?

That'll be another reason Windows sucks, and it'll be one of those appealing things other operating systems will have ("Come on, give Ubuntu a try. You can even turn off the startup sounds in it!!").

If you delete the .wav file it'll probably reappear. I Don't see why they have done this, it seems a bit stupid to me. I hope it doesn't get installed on my work's PC, if so I'll build a little device to disconnect the speakers for X number of seconda from turning the power on to the PC.
This is not a Windows help forum, however please do feel free to sign up and agree or disagree with our views on Microsoft.

Oh and FUCKMicrosoft! :fu:

I happen to agree with the guy that hopes somebody creates a worm or something that replaces the standard startup sound with a pig squealing. :D

Haven't you people learned by now? Microsoft knows what's best for better than you know yourselves. Just who the hell do you think you are, questioning your betters like that?

BONNNNNNNG

So MS is ripping off what Apple has done for 22 years? Except that on Macs, if the system sound is muted, the startup sound doesn't play.

What you refer to a startup sound on a Mac is actually a signal that your computer has passed its Power-On Self Test (POST).  Which is very useful on a Mac, since you don't see anything on the screen until the graphics system is loaded.  So really, the POST ding on a Mac is the Apple equivalent of those splash screens that run on a PC while the BIOS is being loaded.  Totally different way of handling the startup process, requiring totally different sensory clues.

The startup sound under discussion is something totally different.

Oh, I know.

Doesn't change the fact that MS has decided to use an unchangable noise at startup.
