Longhorn. Whats your opinion?
« on: 24 April 2003, 02:36 »
Hello,

If anyone has done any research about longhorn, they would wouldn't buy it.

Longhorn apparently only runs software that has been designed for Longhorn. It won't run anything else for Windows unless it's Windows Longhorn designed.

People's privicy today is just bloody awlful. You can't fucking take a wizz without Microsoft selling infomation to other companies about what tiolet ur using.

On one last note, have you got one of the fastest computers in the world? Well you gonna have to get one. Oh, don't forget a shit load of memory and massive video card along with a DVD burner.

What's your opinion?

Would you buy it if you were stupid?

Later,

If you're talking about Palladium, then you should read more into it. According to MS, it will only be enacted when the software is specifically written to use it. It'll still run old programs and files. Even MS isn't stupid enough to make a new OS that requires completely new software.

Paladium was going to be this draconian Anti-Piracy, privacy invading, fasciest software layer implimented on all new windows, that would interact with TCPA fritz chips and only allow "authorized software" to run on your computer. It would make it illegal for you to even run Linux!

Anyway, M$ has since revised it's plan when it realized that the software industry was way more lucrative than protecting the entertainment industries media. Heh, monetary clout goes a long way. So they have trimed their initiative back. I don't even think it is called palladium anymore.

In any case, from what I hear Longhorn is very.... well.. wierd. It redesigns the desktop metaphore from scratch from what I hear. It should be interesting to see actually.

It may even be another BOB! YAY!

All this means is that Longhorn will have window shadows, folder "piles" from OS X.3, and maybe the multiple desktop features and panel design of GNOME.  Actually I would like it if they just went ahead and took *all* the good UI features from OS X, at least then most of the computers I encounter day-to-day would be nice to use!

I saw screenshots of a leaked longhorn beta in australian personal computer magazine.  what "radical changes?"  they did two things from what i saw : put the startbar thats normally on the bottom of the screen to being on the left hand side of the screen.  "wow."  i mean i couldnt do that with my mouse or anything myself...
two they made the quickstart toolbar (you know the one no-one uses?) bigger.
oh and apparently it will "centralise" file storage.  and they had a bigger clock embedded in the start bar.  i would go and get the magazine with the article in it but its in canberra and im in victoria so im kinda gunna have to wait till i post the screenshots... they could be on apcmag.com but i warn you the site is pretty crap.

i dont really care if they steal gnomes drawers and mac os' piles.  a crap os is a crap os whether they copy good os' or not.

stupid people will buy/pirate this though i guarantee you.  the urge to have the latest version is just too strong.

marketing goon ur new product is a step backwards in performance and reliability! we're counting on your irrational need to own the latest version.
dilbert:i hate your weasel guts. but i'll take two, one for the home and one from the office.

and i read today some company upgraded some of its mother boards and needed to reactivate their windows xp copies. microsoft has told them that "now they're new computers and you need to buy a new product activation code." lol.

If all the n00bs find out that they need to upgrade all their software then they will just downgrade or will get linux (if they're told about it?).

Knowing what I know now, I don't think I will bother getting a pir8ed version of Longhorn. XP is the last for me.

If Longhorn has insane system requirements(and it really shows when you run it), those who pirate it will start going back to older wind0ze. I guess those who buy it too. I mean most people who buy/pirate an OS would know some basics about installing it(or have a friend to do it).

You would have to have a "long-horn" shoved up your ass if you were going to buy it.

I hear that Longhorn will be like a service, like paying for internet service or something.
