Hi,

I work for a well known educational organiusation, which I won't mention cos I ain't giving the assholes publicity (look out for a sucks site soon)

My job is to get educational software running on a highly unreliable platform, Windoze.

It was always bad before but Windoze ME (or Monkey Edition as I refer to it) took the biscuit, virtually nothing will run on it.

Then came XP, even worse, I actually think that Microsoft should be prosecuted for the poor perfrmance of its OS products, nenver mind anti-competitive business practices.

oh, and if you're reading this Bill, up yours!!

No wonder many ITs are Windoids. Their jobs depend on M$ crapiness.

Believe me, I'm no windroid, the sooner my organisation starts to support other platforms such as Linux the better.

I also want to get rid of Windoze on my home PC, can anyone recommend a particular Linux ditribution that I can download for free and any sort of replacement software for things such as office and IM clients?

Cheers

red hat 9 or mandrake 9.1
gaim for IM
open office for an office suite.

Open office can read and write to ms office files, and it is a smaller file.

i am using red hat 9 right now, but i kinda want to put mandrake back on. Both are excellent distro's.

This thread has been moved to the "Microsoft Operating Systems" section. This isn't about "Microsoft in the News".

Not just ITs, hell, there are entire companies that do nothing but sell apps that overcome the many manifest weaknesses of Winderz:    Symantec (Norton anti-virus, Norton Clean Sweep: program archiving, registry cleaning, program uninstall), McAfee (anti-virus), LavaSoft (anti-spyware/adware), to name just three. If M$ actually improved Winderz, they'd destroy a good chunk of the economy.  :D
