system registry

Hello.  I have win 98.  I wish to clean out the registry of spy ware and chain server type junk.  I think there is something running hidden in the background.  My nephew used AIM on it as well as Kazaa and I myself tried a few online radio web sites that <unknowingly> happen to place chain server stuff on the hard drive.  I have uninstalled everything I could find, but when I run msconfig, a lot of stuff is still there waiting to be checked to start up on boot up.  I want to clean it up.  I have Norton system works and within it is a tool for editing the registry (Norton registry editor).  What files or folders should I look out for?

These 2 little freeware programs will get rid of any and all spyware that is on your system. They are freeware programs so they won't cost you a penny. Both of the programs remove spyware files, spyware registry entries, spyware cookies, etc. It is highly recommended that you run both of the programs to make sure you are totally spyware free(ad-aware picks up some stuff that Spybot misses).

Spybot Search and Destroy

Ad-Aware

Oh, boy...Unfortunately this is how windows works normally. So there's nothing to fix really.

I would tell you to try windowsbbs.com but I think it's still down.

EDIT: Nope, it's up, with an even bigger yellow pop up!

Oh, and don't listen to Zombie. The last think you need is MORE appz running in the background.

Oh shut the fuck up man. I'm the Windows guru around here. Typical replies from you would be telling her to get a non-MS operating system. Me on the other hand, I actually know how to deal with Windows issues and still use Windows(and might I add my Windows boxes are spyware free and are pretty secure ;P). If you don't think my box is secure, then hack me bitch...12.109.88.52

Oh yeah, for your information. Neither of those apps run in the background. When you are finished running them and close them out the program is terminated. There are no background services being run by them at all. As a matter of fact, those apps may remove some background services(if there are spyware services running in the background on the system they will be removed).

Actually, I can take care of most of my stuff without the need of any 3rd party apps. Alot of people can't do stuff manually though so there are handy lil apps available to do the shit for them. I am certified and I work with computers almost everyday at work...yes...I said *work*..something that quite a few people here don't do(most of the boxes that go into the shop are Windows boxes). I am a guru, alright pal. ;P

Now will you please just shut your fucking cocksucker unless you have anything helpful to say in this thread(seeing how it is a help thread you know    ).

Soooooo... we got a guru, huh?

O.k., I got a question for the guru.

A coworker had xp totally fubar today, and all he does is send/receive email, and input names and adresses in to access. Norton AV is running, and is updated on a regular basis. This is the second time in two months that xp is completely unbootable. What do you think "trap  000000006" means?

It means total reinstall. LOL!

Help? well I did put the windowsbbs.com link didnt I?

And I didn't use any foul, potty-mouthed language like some people. How do you think the lady is gonna feel when she reads your scribble?

I'm sure you remember when Ad-Aware mistakingly thrashed cscore.dll, attrributing it to Comet Cursor, but unwittingly thrashing Norton Clean Sweep, CuteFTP, and others in the process.

well hilary, there is NO WAY to actually make sure that there is no spyware, and there are no background processes running in windows. There are several utilities you can use to try and do this however they all edit your registry and make other applications that bit more unstable as a result. Plus, you have a problem in that very few, if any, utilities can stop the windows components themselves from spying on you and from damaging programs' settings.

i could recommend a couple of apps that you could use, just like zombie die, if i were going to, i would probably recommend zonealarm which will enable you to keep tabs on all ingoing and outgoing IP data, effectively making you aware of any spyware goings on, and IEradicator, which will remove many of the biggest security threats facing windows right now.

But as i said, who wants more programs installed on your machine, ruining the settings for everything else? when it comes down to it, the best way to make sure your windows PC is not doing anything you don't want it to do is to never switch it on. If you use your windows computer, you really have to accept that it will be doing a certain amount of unwanted things. Such is the nature of a closed source "operating system".

And rudeCat, how do you know that hilary is a lady? Hilary is a name that can be given to men or women!

1) I am a guy.
2) There is no need to repost parts of my question in your message.
3) There is less than no need to take previous arguments or hostility to my message thread.

Thanks for the help (to those who offered it) but I still don't know what areas of the registry are "key" areas for spyware and the like or what current spy or chain surfing programs are going around.  I DO use an executable bat file to clean folders on boot up.  It runs the file deleting instructions this web site suggests you use:

http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml

I know that some files re-install themselves from hidden files on every boot up.  These are the one I am trying to eliminate.

1)great, so am i.

2)why not? does it make you feel insulted? does it waste space? il tell you why people *should* do this, it helps people reading the list keep track of what answers go with what questions. this list is not your personal whipping boy, you know, other people need to read it too.

3) i imagine that you think i am one of the people who offered you no help do you? how elitist your comments are, what, pray tell have you ever contributed to me that makes you think you can talk to me in this insulting fashion? you

So to HELP.

There is EVERY reason to be hostile. This is FUCKMICROSOFT, we run under the auspice of Microsoft Eradication, we don't want to fight with    their software. We help people get away from M$. You specifically asked for M$ Windows help. You got a better reception than some, Calum offered up some sage advise.

The information you want is known to crackers, hackers and M$ software *cough*engineers*cough*. There are only three ways to get your answer.

1. Become a M$ coder.
2. Become a cracker and teach yourself.
3. Drop M$ software and use a Mac, or Linux, or UNIX. (guess what? this is the option I took, required I never had to learn M$ registry editing, autoupdates, spyware, etc.).

And to note. YOU CANNOT REMOVE THE AUTOUPDATE FILES, M$ code them into their compiled code, they do not offer the code uncompiled, so you cannot remove them.

Most of the things you need to remove are either picked up by IE (because it is so fucking insecure) or because you downloaded a program of the internet. Did you make the mistake of selecting a dialer executable, or maybe you got pissed when some sites altered your Links listing and added stuff to your start menu.

Don't be so miserable.

Zombie offered programs, however you cannot prove these programs are not as bad as the spyware you wish to remove.

Rudecat was totally right to point this out.

And Calum gave good advise, remove IE and dump M$ Windows in the long run. So WTF is your problem?
