Ogg is the best. It doesn't have DRM, you don't have to pay a license if you include it in your software (unlike mp3), and it's up to CD quality (and even beyond).

From the article

Ogg Vorbis is indeed free and it sounds great to boot. Unfortunately, it has no built-in DRM, so none of those legal online music stores will touch it unless they tack on a proprietary DRM technology. If that happened, then we're right back to the problem with iTunes and the iPod: you're locked into a single brand of portable player and a single piece of PC software.

I expect the iPod/iTunes duo to get Netscaped by WMA-compatible stuff within a few years.

Dammit, why the *&$# do they assume DRM must be in  legally downloaded music?

If we are gonna pay for something we don't need DRM.  Magnatune has the right idea.

It's very very disturbing that people accept the idea that MS will "netscape" music and anything else it wants.

It has been known that Windows Media Player 9, which contains DRM, removes some mp3's that you previously downloaded off KaZaA or Gnutella.

What the fuck? As much as I hate Microsoft, I find that hard to believe. How does it know which MP3s I downloaded fom Kazaa? What about the dozens of MP3s I made myself? Just cause an MP3 doesnt have DRM doesn't mean thats its an illegal file. Do you have any articles or proof about this?

Blacklisted? Please elaborate.
Windows: 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor written by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

A blacklist is a list of bad things, supposedly appliciable in this situation. In the TCPA view, certain pirated versions of programs and such would be "blacklisted", ie refuse to run. If an mp3 hash or md5 is found to be shared on kazaa from a bunch of users, Microsoft could blacklist them - the media player would delete all blacklisted items.

At least that's how I think it would go.
