Opera is my browser of choice... hey I even paid to get rid of the banner ads.

Unfortunately I have to use IE on occasion when people don't design their website properly.

Gratz of liberating yourself from the browser that wants to sell you.

Maybe there are some other things you can do to liberate yourself further from the evil empire.  Can you think of any more?  Try Mozilla too someday if you have free time.

Hi, this is my first post here.

Today I too freed myself from MSIE and enjoy every minute of Opera. I got sick of Microsoft hiding things from me. I also like the fact that using Opera, I'm basically free. The ads may get annoying one day, but not as annoying as MSIE was. My only problem is that I'm a member of a few vBulliten forums, they don't seem to be compatible with Opera.

A tip for those who use MSNMessanger: Download Trillian. It's ad free, it's spyware free and unlike MSN it lets you know it's logging what you say. It's also in nice little *.txt (or *.log) files which can easily be deleted.

i agree with both of those sentiments. A hint for you though, go into the preferences menu of opera, and i think you need to bring up the 'network' dialogue. Anyway, in one of the preferences screens, you will find an option to 'identify as', and i suggest you set this to read 'Mozilla 5' or whatever the highest version of mozilla is on that list, and then try your vBulletin boards again.

Also, it might be worth your while getting the latest stable version of mozilla too, since you can then always just use mozilla if you have any real problems with a page in opera.

i have only ever found one page that cannot be displayed using mozilla OR opera and it was on Microsoft.com. Actually, opera displayed it okay if i set it to identify as internet explorer, however i did not want to do that, as i felt i shouldn't have to.

as for trillian, i used to use it a lot, and found it had a lot better stuff than msn, however it would ocassionally be a bit erratic. In the last week or two i have finally got connected to the internet using linux, and i find that a program called AMSN perfectly emulates msnmessenger. In trillian i had problems with smileys not being the same as msn, and with my display name not having the option to change in trillian. All this is fixed in AMSN. I really like it! for those interested, here's the link...

welcome to the boards and all that as well!   :D

You can change your MSN Display name using Trillian. Go to Account Prefrences in the MSN menu.

Smilies are still different though.

It seems that Opera may have a problem with the way vB forums are set up. Each post is a seperate table to the last and so the table ends (on the left side) where the Avatar (or a really long username) ends.

Thanks for the pointers though, I didn't know I could set Opera to "appear" as another browser.

I'm testing it out for everyone else. If it works well (which it is) I'll rename iexplore.exe and rename opera.exe to iexplore.exe as all programs won't have problems with it.

i think you will probably find a file called iexplore.exe within your opera folder. there are no instructions for what to do with this file, but i suspect that if you delete iexplore.exe and your system later asks you where it is, you can point it to that file. that's what i found with opera 6.01/windows anyway.

oh yes, and re: trillian display name, that's fine but it goes belly up if you use your account using a non-trillian msn client in between times, if you use msn on another computer, or amsn on linux for instance, the trillian/msn name changes do not work well with each other
