how to use ftp?

hello there. i am currently having to use the file transfer program on my flatmate's winXP machine which sucks but so far it seems to be identical to ftp on linux. anyway the thing is that this winXP version has no man pages that i can find, so what i want to know is, i have just had a huge formatting accident and i need to ftp into my web hosts and download all the files in my forum. there are many subdirectories. Can i automate the getting of these subdirectories or do i need to descend into each one by hand and mget each one individually.

Also, how do i stop it asking for confirmation for each file i want to get?

It hurts to say it... but internet explorer sounds like your solution. On the address bar, where you normally put http://domain.tld/subdirector...

put this instead:

ftp://[email protected]

That will open up a folder very similar to the local file manager windows has.

Refalm i am using 'ftp' which is the command line program. I was going to install WS_FTP which i know automates the ftp command line, but basically it's not my machine so i don't want to when i can just use the preinstalled command line ftp program that comes with the system.

stryker, i will actually try to do that since i am using this shitty winxp machine, HOWEVER i would still like to figure out how to do it properly by hand.

Okay, i tried that internet explorer thing and here's what i got:

No, just type "prompt" at the "ftp>" prompt to make it stop prompting for each file. Type "?" or "help" for a list of other commands. And you can use IE as mentioned above as a "cheap" WS_FTP but I've never used XP (and never will) so I don't know if it works the same.

It always works for me, the internet explorer thing, i must have given bad directions. all well. When ftp opens and you log in, prompt is a command on it's own, not a parameter for another command (as it should be). I would expect something similar to this:

Welome to FTP Server,  Please log in:
(user): myusername
(pass): mypassword

Welcome.
ftp> prompt
ftp> mget thisfolder
Retrieving...
Done.
ftp> quit

(I would avoid internet explorer, but use it before downloading a ftp client)

I do believe that the client CuteFTP will allow you to download a complete directory without prompting for each file.  It's main features are a main screen showing the FTP accounts contents, a small sidebar to the left that shows a directory on your computer and the bottom shows file transfer progress.  

If you cant find a copy online (Which shouldnt be too hard.) I could just send you the install files with a serial.

i think Internet Explorer makes a pretty good FTP client actually... transfering files is as easy as using Windows Explorer

if you want an FTP server for Windows, try TYPSoft FTP Server

Sure, it does I guess.  Try Mozilla, works just as well.  How about Opera.
