So lets arrest all chip moders, then people will just do it for themselves.

I seen a thing about this on TV not to long ago, but wouldnt the DMCA also cover this?  I would think it would, and if it doesnt then it will soon change.  I'd never EVER buy an X-Cocks but i bet it sure bites MS's ass that ppl run Linux on it.

P.S. if they know how to use Linux and know its better, why arent the smart enough to not buy a Xbox?  Jesus I'd choose one of them K-Mart brand 8-bit controller/system before the X-Crotch

why? because the xbox has good hardware, and ms looses money everytime you buy one. they gain profit on the software.

so, if you can
1) make ms loose money
2) get good hardware cheap
3) run linux

i'd say it's a good deal : )

course, i'm never going to buy one, cause i already run linux on 2 computers...

This "ms loses money every time you buy one" bit has made MS "threaten" to not make the xbox two (which is in rnd atm apparently...) in Australia.
Apparently because Australian law states that mod chips are fully legal little Billy has got the shits with us.
[sarcasm]"dear God! No!"[/sarcasm]

edit : what other company would be stupid enough to follow up an utter version one failure with version two so quikly?

well the sheeple will think "i paid for this xbox shit, they've made the xbox 2 so quickly, that must be to fix the mistakes". doing it so quickly is part of the marketing.

as for the australia thing, what a load of shit, that's what they get for screwing over those schools in victoria, people aren't as stupid as microsoft may think, also they forget australia isn't (quite) america,

well it was a good while ago (probably mid or late nineties) and you know what, i may even hang my head and admit it might not have even been in victoria (may have been SA for all i can remember) does anybody know what the details of this were because i can't get google to tell me?

http://www.cyberknights.com.au/schools.phtml
there's a general article about the microsoft/schools situation but from what i heard microsoft had been taken to court or something and had to make some kind of settlement with some australian schools so they donated a lot of computers with windows 95 on them or something but the licence agreements said that the computers would not be legal for the schools or anybody else to use unless the original operating system was NOT replaced (ie with any other windows OR linux et cetera system).

now that's rright out of the back of my brain so all or none of it may be inaccurate.

The XBox is nasty hardware, you get cheap hardware cheap, its Intel based for crist sake.

PC's are like old side valve V8's that are souped up. Macs are like Euro car engines, and AMD are like Jap Cars.

Euro cars are more powerfull then the souped up bombs, and reliable, AMD are really fast, but not quite as reliable.

Intel are the Holden of CPU's (AKA there CRAP)

Here's an idea: Apple start making OS X for the PC as well, and Microsoft start making Windows for the Mac, (after all, the mac is more stable because of it's processor) and life will be good.
Specifications are for the weak and timid!
You question the worthiness of my code? I should kill you where you stand!
Indentation?! - I will show you how to indent when I indent your skull!
What is this talk of 'release'? Klingons do not make software 'releases'. Our software 'escapes' leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality assurance people in its wake.
Klingon function calls do not have 'parameters' - they have 'arguments' - and they ALWAYS WIN THEM.
Debugging? Klingons do not debug. Our software does not coddle the weak.
A TRUE Klingon Warrior does not comment on his code!
Klingon software does NOT have BUGS. It has FEATURES, and those features are too sophisticated for a Romulan pig like you to understand.
You cannot truly appreciate Dilbert unless you've read it in the original Klingon.
Our users will know fear and cower before our software! Ship it! Ship it and let them flee like the dogs they are!

OK two points...One. I live in SA, an i goto TAFE. The government has been doubly-fucked as far as IT goes. they're stuck in a contract with EDS for the next couple of years still, and because they have some 'deal' with microsoft where they can get pretty much any MS software for free, thats what we get stuck with.

And as for the xbox/chipping. It is perfectly legal to chip a game console, and the manufacturer is required by law to repair the unit if something is faulty, as long as it isn't related to the chip.

And on the xbox itself. While i have a strong dislike of ms, and its products. I have yet to see a game console that is comparable to the xbox. the ability to link 4 (or 16 in UT 2003) xboxs together using STANDARD (yes i was shocked too) Cat5 ethernet cable and switches/hubs to play muliplayer games alone is enough to kill anything else. i would love if the PS3 had ethernet, usb controllers, 40Gb hd, firewire/firewire800. 7.1 sound/HDTV/widescreen support, just to make some sort of competition to the xbox offerings. but at the moment, the xbox is clearly the best gaming console around

Sorry about the South Australia / Important state comment, you knows I not mean it.  But still, you South Australians should stop picking on us Victorians over the Grand Prix or whatever!

I would very much like to see you try however.

That's never mattered with consoles.  What matters is the games, and the XBox is sorely lacking some of the extremely good games the PS2 offers.

Thanks to that gold coast dude for the link, and BTW my Comp Sci department uses all Solaris sun rays which are slowly being replaced with Linux boxes.

edit:isnt the gold coast in Queensland???
