ok, iv gotten down to building choasnetos, which version of gcc should i use do you think quick

ok, between gcc 2.95.3 and gcc 3.1 which is best for compatibilty and such i need this fast, like very very very very very fast

okay, well i have had no problems with gcc 3.0 (which comes with mandrake 8.2) but some problems with gcc 2.96 (which came with red hat 7.0) and it seems that gcc 3 is best for compatibility, HOWEVER some things REquire 2.96 or they will not compile. I am not sure if this is fixed in 3.1. Anybody else know?

What is the main purpose behind your OS btw? i am really interested in how it's going and what it'll be like, as i want to try it out some time when i finally get a second machine (who knows when that'll be?) anyway, the name suggests a networking OS, but i suspect it'll be media and office as well, yes?

actally it will be all of that. my plan was to build it, then make a tarball of it. that would be the uber elite ChoasNETOS. all earlly versions will be installed with some sort of linux floppy and a cdrom. all do it yourself setup. then after that,/*i should get done somethime tonight*/ i will start adding things like xfree86 4.2 and such and make anohter tarball. i plan on not using a package management system with the base system, but i will try to include apt-get, rpm, and support for slackpacks. it will kinda be like the install the first gig or so and your set to install what you want on it. im not even includeing support to install things like grub right now. im going after content like kde3.1 and gnome2 and other things, maybe a self compiled openoffice if i can find a few days to build it.


as i said, /*i think i am ranting right now*/ at first it will just be a generic LFS build, but i will ad things to it. and besides, even without all the love and effort that i am getting ready to put into it, i have never seen a precompiled lfs tarball, so that will be a first in and of itself, have phun  ;)

2.5.26 = latest kernel beta. you'll have your own OS _and_ be a beta tester!

but i don't want to stuff a lot of beta stuff in this os, its meant to be uberstable and basassed, i have never had much luck with a beta kernel. i get alot of this

if i make a tarball of the build environment so far and i give it to you, do you think you could make a working 2.5.26 kernel for it. if you feel so inclined to help the ChoasNETOS project our/*its only one man with no website, like early beginnings*/ i can give it to you and a list of hardware that i need supported. i already have a 2.4.18 kernel doing the job, but its highly optimized for my system, to boot ChoasNETOS you probably need to rebuild the current kernel. but you could always chroot to build environment and make the kernel from there.

is anyone up for this??? and could someone help me design the a website, i know jack shit about html editing and such.

and on the topic of ChoasNETOS's progress, i have already installed gpm, ncftp, openssl, zlib, and links.

and some hand hacking of a few config files, but that would make it easyer to run on other systems and better

ok, i heard about a an odd option that will make linux run faster, but it would require an entirly new rebuild of the ChoasNETOS dev environment, which takes about a day and a half, do you think it is worth it or not??? the supposed gains, are about 30%

sounds like im hogging the thread, but then agian im updatnig you about ChoasNETOS, and since i don't have a site or hosting yet/*hint hint*/ im using this. i decided about the kernel. take a stock 2.4.18, and patch the hell out of it. i am currently going to try to use gentoo's kernel. it come's out at version 2.4.19, when the gentoo patchs are done with it.

PS, could a moderator please change the name of this thread to "ChoasNETOS status"
