Ok... im gonna try PENGAol.... I dont understand it really...

How do I mount it? cant i just burn the peng files ( theyre all .linux extensions not windows files ) then insert it in my linux OS and then install PENG??

Can someone explain?

Most of us probably can't explain because most of us don't use AOL. Did it come with any directions? Could you post a link to where you got it?

What version of Mandrake are you using? It actually looks like it must work. Did you see this:

I downloaded and extracted the archive mentioned in the above article and the "How-to-install-En" instructions look pretty straight forward. It actually looks pretty simple, but I'm not energetic enough to hook up a modem and find a local AOL number to test it (don't have an account anyhow). Maybe another Mandrake user here can try it out and help you if you need help with the instructions...

Download this file:
http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pengaol/pengaol-0.96-1.i586.rpm onto windows.

Then reboot into linux. create a directory -

$ mkdir /mnt/win2k

Then mount your win2k (or any other windows) partion on it.

$ mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/win2k

Let me explain -- hda1 means device on IDE channel 0 (the first one), master device (hence the "a"), partion 1. If you have windows on your main HD on the first partion, type the above it. If it's on the, lets say, third partion, type in:

$ mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/win2k

When you do that, type in "su", press enter, and it will ask you for your root password type it in, press enter.

Then do

$ cd /mnt/win2k

and you'll see all of your files in Windows. go to the directory you saved the .rpm file to using the "cd directory-name-goes-here" command (if you need to go to a diretory with spaces in it's name, use quotes).

When you finally get there, type in:

$ rpm -ivh pengaol-0.96-1.i586.rpm

There! You're done! You probably run it by typing in "pengaol" in the command prompt.

Your modem is a real, external, serial modem.  That is the _best_ you can get for Linux!  If you have only one serial port (the "funny port that looks like |0|0|"), your modem will be accessed by /dev/ttyS0


AOL has a beta product out for linux to allow you connect.  You can try it out.

There is also an opensource beta program you can try called "Peng for AOL".

hrmz... im having troubles installing PENG.... first of all, i cant even access a .trz file... i cant open it, second, when I went to the terminal ( under root ) when i did mkdir /mnt/win2k it created it, then i did mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/win2k it said something like win2k is busy, then it said, that hda1 is already mounted in this other folder "NT" so i go into NT... and it has all my fucking files from my other hard drive..... but i mean, it WAS my other h/d, whats odd tho is..... i mean, i could access files on my h/d i had put security on! and i could access it thru mandrake... with no trouble.

I just dont understand howto do this peng install..... and, i copied what that dude said and made a txt file, put it on a floppy, and read it step by step.... i dont understand....

You can't mount the same partion on two mount points      

to unmount it, do

$ umount /mnt/nt

then you can mount it on win2k, so..

$ mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/win2k

And about your little "this folder won't delete" complaint, you have to use a -r option. So if you want to delete /mnt/win2k and just use /mnt/nt (it really shouldn't matter) do...

$ umount /mnt/win2k

(or else you'll delete windows)

$ rm -r /mnt/win2k

Now, as for this happening:
[root@localhost nt]# cd "Documents And Settings/Administrator/Desktop

it was because you didn't close the quotation and because rpm -ivh [pengol-name-here].rpm is not a file, but a command.

Correctly, it should be:

$ cd "Documents And Settings/Administrator/Desktop"

Then you should move the file to your Linux partion (just in case something happens and you need ro reinstall). And you misspelled ".rpm"

So you do

$ mv pengaol-0.96-1.i586.rpm /root

Then you go to /root

$ cd /root

And then, finally...

$ rpm -ivh pengaol-0.96-1.i586.rpm

Now try running it...

$ pengaol

also, ive been noticing somethingGAY with windows ever since i installed mandrake.


When I boot windows it asks to check disk D(mandrake) for CONSITENCY. i hit no, and when windows boots up. It takes a FUCK LOAD of a long time to get the Log-on screen loaded ( win2k )

when windows loads when ever i try an open a program, it takes FOREVER to open, or doesn't open at all..

when i click my computer, it says 0 OBJECTS. so i gotta wait like 10 minutes, before it shows all my stuff...

seems like microsoft doesnt like linux!!! them cock suckers~~~
