network to winblows
« on: 2 May 2002, 11:29 »
i am new to linux

i have a small winblows network going

my younger brother uses winblows in the next room

i also have linux on that computer, but he is part of the microshaft herd

i have windows on a small partition on my computer on our little network, and in that respect everything is five by five.

what i need to do is have my linux networked to his winblows pc, allowing him to access both partitions here--or at least just the windows partition.

I would also like to access both of his partitions.

is this possible?

point me in the right direction.... there were several hits but i am new.

your absolutely right.. in fact i think i deserve a Jones soda, because i kick ass
i think samba will be the easiest way to network your windows and linux computers, Samba comes with most distributions (at least with red hat) you may even have it already installed.

Uh, the most up to date Samba/Documentation would be at http://www.samba.org but you will also have the key info on your hard drive if you have installed Samba. Location of the DOCS on your hard drive would be distro specific but likely under either /usr/share/doc/samba* or /usr/doc/samba*.

Also since you want to use his machine as the server rather than your Linux box (which would actually make more sense) you would use either the "smbclient" or "smbmount" commands. But you can actually make your Linux machine masquerade as an NT Server and create your own Windows shares. "swat" or "webmin" are good web based utilites to configure your Samba server.  I prefer to edit the "smb.conf" file manually.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...
