as people have been saying, using the latest kde and gnome on that computer is not going to be very fast. use windowmaker, xfce, fvwm95 or enlightenment i suggest. Slack will run those fine on your computer.
If you really don't want to use slack, i suggest using peanut linux, or perhaps vector linux (although i could not get vector linux to run X with my video card), peanut uses enlightenment by default, it's a 100MB download or so, and takes up 500MB when installed.
No GNOME or KDE libs come with it though so be prepared to groan on about how you can't install anything.
