Stupid Q's about Mandrake...
« on: 13 August 2002, 21:21 »
I installed Mandrake onto another machine (yes, I got it working this time!) and have a couple of questions on configuring different things.

1) I am using KDE and have that menu bar at the top of the screen that looks like a Mac.  I don't want it but when I deselect it in the "control center" and hit "apply", it doesn't go away!  I want it to go away.  How do I do this?

2) How do I change the resolution of my monitor?  I know, it's dumb.

3) In konqueror, how do I set my home page and how do I get the menu bar back?  I hid it by accident and I want it back.  All I have now are the Main Bar, and the Address Bar.

I know that I am an idiot but if someone could help me I would be greatly appreaciative!

1. right click on desktop, select 'disable desktop menu'. I didnt even know that i could have that meny 'till yesterday.

2. try 'ctrl+alt+keypad +' hitting that should switch through screenmodes. If that doesnt work, then it gets only a bit more complicated. Why didnt you set the resolution properly at isntallation?

3. Right click anywhere in the main area (where the pages show up) and then select 'show menubar'.

4. to set the homepage: click settings->configure konqueror->filemanager, behavior then just enter your home url.

1) What version of KDE are you using?  I have 3.0 and the option for this menu is under "Kontrol Center"->"Desktop"->"Enable Desktop Menu" checkbox.  I checked that checkbox and clicked "apply" and the top menu appeared. I unchecked it and clicked "apply" and the menu disappeared. Failing that, there should be a pulldown menu on that top menu bar called "Desktop" with an option to "Disable Desktop Menu".  Does that option work?

2) If you configured more than one screen resolution when you installed Mandrake you should be able to switch resolutions by pressing the CTRL+ALT+KPPLUS (KPPLUS is the "+" on the number pad).  If you press these key combinations and it does not switch resolution then you only have one configured.  I'm not sure what the graphical tool is in Mandrake for configuring this but I think you can do it in "drakx" (anyone?).  Failing that, you can either edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and add more resolutions or you can run "Xconfigurator". After adding the resolutions you will need to restart X.  If you want to manually edit the XF86Config-4 file scroll down to the 'Section "Screen"' where you should find a 'Subsection "Display"'. Under that there should be a line that looks like:

Code: [Select]

(or whatever the one resolution you currently have configured).  Make that line look like:

Code: [Select]

Just make sure that you put the resolution that you want to be the "default" as the first one in the list.  Then after you restart Xwindows you should be able to use the CTRL+ALT+KPPLUS key combo to toggle between each resolution.  I recommend manually editing the file (make a backup copy of the original one first no matter which way you decide to do it so you have the good working copy in case something doesn't get configured right.

3) Since you have the "Desktop Menu" (top menu) turned on you will probably notice that the Konqueror menus are displayed there when Konqueror is in the forground.  If you get your Desktop Menu turned off the Konqueror menu should reappear where you expect it.

to change your resolution the other way, you will have to edit the XF86config-4 file    or use xconfigurator from the console which will do it for you.

To edit the file yourself you; open up /etx/X11/XF86Config-4 in your favorite editor as root. You can open up in the console in vi after doing 'su -' to get into root. or 'alt+F2' to open the run command to run kate (or any editor) then open 'options' and select run as different user and type 'root' and enter the password.

in your XF86Config-4 there is many different sections, the one you want to edit is the 'screen' section. It will look like:
Code: [Select]
beside 'modes' are the resolution modes your compute can go trhough with <ctrl>+<alt>+<+>
the first mode is default (mine is 1024x768) you can change it to anything you want, just type the res in brackets that you want "1600x1200' for example. Then save and restart X.
To restart X just type init 3 and then init 5 to switch down to runlevel 3 and then back up to runlevel 5 as root. Or logout of kde then <ctrl+e> i think will restart X.
