I was just playing with Xine tonight (in RedHat though). I just made my first VCD. I captured video from my digital video camera, and created a VCD. All with open source software. Then I played it in Xine. I don't have a DVD player other than my PS2 but it appears that the PS2 will not play VCDs. I guess my kids will get a DVD player this Christmas. Then I can dump all my videos to VCD (or DVD). And just burn copies of the CDs for the relatives.

But Knoppix is packed to the hilt! Thank GNU for compressed CD file systems.

PS- I am gonna try to install Knoppix to a hard drive per the instructions, but, wouldn't it be cool if Knoppix came out with a full installation distro? It would own!!!

I am extremly tired righ now to play around with it any further. I had VERY VERY little sleep all this week so i dont wanna play and fak up something.

Screw Windows as a client for my VNC connection for my presentation. I will use this and have them all in the class going "What the fuck is going on here?"

Well, I have the Sony DCR-TRV320 digital video camera. I don't recall what firewire video capture card I have but I bought it a couple of years ago. lspci says this:

But that's just the chipset, not the make of the card. I know it came with the Pinnacle DV Studio software but I think many of those cards did. I know I picked it up at Best Buy. And I have an old HP CD Writer Plus 8200 CD burner that I used to burn the VCDs. I can find out the exact capture card model if you would like me to dig around for the box or open up the case on the computer. I know for sure that it wasn't the Dazzle. I'm pretty sure it was a Pinnacle card.

It already has a full distro. It's called Debian.

I've written a short tutorial on how to install Knoppix 3.1 to a HD; I'll send a copy to anyone who wants it.  BE WARNED: Knoppix is based on Debian SiD; it's the "unstable" branch of Debian; if you decide to use apt-get dist-upgrade, be prepared to have problems; also, you may (depending on your location in the world) want to edit /etc/apt/sources.list to reflect North American sources; the Knoppix defaults are European.

The one I have does not appear to have RCA inputs. I believe you can get a TV capture card very cheaply though that will work. I just read an article about turning your computer into a VCR (like a TiVo) using one (in Linux). Ah yes, it was on the same site with the dvbackup:

I was going to say, I am much more interested in the most non-frequenly asked questions than I am in the frequently asked ones. But non-frequently asked questions shouldn't be on a FAQ, they should be on an NFAQ (na, we don't need to start one of those).
