Just for the kernel compiling guru's i stumbled across a few patches you might be intrested it

GRSecurity (http://www.grsecurity.net) for kernel version 2.4.17, lots of good secruity patches. Protects against TONS of exploits.

Preempt (http://www.tech9.net/rml/linux/) for kernel 2.4.17 +(?) makes the kernel less laggy...

if you want a security patch check out what the NSA has done with SELinux.  It rules.  Finally context roles for linux.
If ignorance is bliss, why aren't there more happy people?

While your at it install these libraries in the following order for all you "security" monitoring and evaluation

1) libpcap
2) libnet

If you want a good scanner for scanning vulnerabilities I think "nessus" is one of the best.  See http://www.nessus.org
