I heard from a friend there was this Linux operating system called 'slackware'. I checked out the site...but I need a few opinions. Has anyone ever used slackware? And is it a worth-wile download?

Slack is said to be very good, but it is definately a distro for those who know what they are doing. If you are just migrating then best to steer clear for a while until you know how to use Linux.

It's the most UNIX-like Linux you've seen. Almost everything is done by command-promt, which makes it run faster compared to X Windows orientated distro's (Red Hat Linux, Mandrake Linux, Lycoris Desktop/LX etc.) in theory, and runs well on older computers.

If you are new to Linux, I suggest you don't try Slackware. It's recommended that you learn most common GNU/UNIX commands before booting Slackware.

For advanced Linux users, Slackware is easiyer for them compared to X Windows orientated distro's.

maybe that's why i have so many unresolved problems with my linux box.  I decided to go with slackware as my first distro; but i used to be a DOS commando, so I got the hang of it pretty quick.  about the only thing that took me a while was learning the UNIX equivalents to my old DOS commands... cp, ls, etc.  That, and the fact that the only documentation i have is the stuff pulled from off the web...

after using bash, I can't believe I thought that DOS was powerfull.... HAHAHAHAHA... h-hm.  haha.

I tried downloading slackware... JESUS.. what afucking pain in the arse....

I got mandrake. its most roxorus, but im going to need PENGAol.. ( and get it working =D ) before i can go on line
