mandrake 9 configuration
« on: 1 December 2002, 08:34 »
I know I'm asking for trouble, but here goes.

I just got mandrake 9 installed on my new harddrive (gonna put the old slack in "my" machine later) and there are several interesting glitches.  For starters, i could not do a complete install - the cd is a little damaged, so i might be missing some important packages.... but to the point....

I cannot set the root password.  it is left wide open.  "passwd" results in "User not known to the underlying authentication module".  WTF??

How do I tell mandrake to use shadow passwords?  right now everything is in the world-readable "/etc/passwd" file, including a big gaping hole where the crypted root password should be....
I just copyed and pasted my account's password there...

How do I tell mandrake to use MD5 encryption on the passwords?

I'm sure there is more, but that's it for now...

ps - if at all possible, tell me how to GUI it; I need the experience so I can show my non-computer literate friends the light without scaring them with a console....  the only reason mandrake is still on my hardrive......

encl(1) - missing modules:
the following failed to install because of cd scratches; i don't think they have anything to do with the above tho:

  • losetup-2.11u-1mdk.i586
  • openssh-3.4p1-4mdk.i586   <- might it be this one?
  • xine-plugins-0.9.13-3mdk.i586
  • postgresql-server-7.2.2-1mdk.i586  <- got it via web update duting install
  • xine-ui-0.9.13-2mdk.i586
  • xlockmore-5.04-4mdk.i586
