I've been using RedHat 9.0 for awhile now..but now that I see that there is a wealth of free OSs to screw around with out there I'd like to try some others to see what they are like.

I'm actually downloading slackware as I type this...should I try slackware out..or does it suck?

and I see this Fedora..whats it like?  worth a look...or crap.

anything else you guys think I should try on for size I'm welcome to.

oh...and are there any distros that will actually recognize a serial Hard Drive?  I'd really like to hear about those.

Fedora is still in beta.
Slackware requires some IQ => 110 and Linux experience.
Mandrake will launch 9.2 in a few weeks, which kicks ass.
CalyptOS is still in alpha.

My choice is Mandrake.

Fedora is not in beta anymore, and I highly suggest you try it.  It's the only completely free, easy to use Linux distribution besides Mandrake.

Mandrake 9.2 is also already available.  ;)  
An other easy Linux will be the next Debian.

Still..., slackware is a very good way to learn.

I started on Red Hat, then switched to Mandrake 9.1.  Ive never had any problems with it, and it is extremely easy to learn on.  Therefore, suggesting Mandrake.

I never said I was a newbie...I run redhat from TWM command line...or KDE depending on my mood and level of alchohol consumption.  So with the command line down and a little understanding of shell scripting (both of wich I have)...I'll be able to run slackware. Although Fedora still looks tempting..and I won't have to change my avatar.

I totally agree.  I'm using Mandrake 9.1 (dual boot with Winblows 98 SE) & am finding it pretty easy to pick up.  It's quite stable too.  I'd recommend Mandrake 9.1 to anyone.  Can't wait to check out 9.2!

just downloaded Fedora core 1...installed it.  VERY nice distro...though almost identical to RH9  seems to be faster, and they took away the text bootup in exchange for a more asthetically pleasing thingumy.

Mandrake 9.2 has been out there for a while, and my suggestion for people running Mandrake 9.1 is to stay with it.

I find 9.2 to have some bad bugs. I'm actually looking for a new distro that is more stable than Drake.

All in all, Mandrake is fairly good to learn Linux. I started with Slack and that was a mistake, but I look forward to using it sometime in the near future.

I also installed Knoppix in my HD (not running it from CD) and it's looking pretty smooth. I may try Debian.

I started with Red Hat, now I am running Mandrake, and when I get the time I am going to get Gentoo.  I highly reccomend Mandrake 9.2 even though there are some bugs, none of which have affected me so far.  I have been told that 9.2 is suppose to have a bootsplash too but I don't see it, well I can always get it going myself if I don't feel too layz     I think I need to get a cd-burner, asking my friends to burn me stuff all the time must be annoying for them.  Heck I even got 9.2 on my pops computer and he is pretty slow when it comes to computers, he loves it.  He used Windows before and was fed up with crashes and popups from IE.  The only thing he does not like is that it takes a bit to boot.  I have disabled all services that are not needed already.  He is like the average consumer so for anyone who is looking for something to improve to attract more regular people, that would be a good start.  I know, he does not have to reboot, I have told him but he still does.  Ah, oh well, at least he is converted to Linux now.  He seems to like KDE better than GNOME, it's great cause he has gotten some of his co-workers at work to switch.  ok, enough of my rambling, I am just trying to avoid doing some work that I will have to do either way.
