Red Hat is f0c'd need new OS

OK, I'm giving up on Red Hat. I just can't do it anymore...It's a monotnous pain in the ass to do anything now I know why I didn't boot to it that often. *Slackware gives me less problems* It refuses to run scripts, I get dependency errors no matter what I try to install, even if I install what it wants.

I have Mandrake CDs...but I hear Lycoris is nice. But it looks like M$ ripped them off or vice versa.It is Linux though, so I could always change it. If anyone's using it, your opinion is highly appreciated. Same with Gentoo.

Heheh, I just switched over from Mandrake 8.1 to Redhat 7.2 this morning. I used Mandrake for almost a year and decided to make a change. So far I have had no problems and Redhat seems to be much faster than Mandrake also.

I just downloaded Opera 6.03 and it installed perfectly including upgrading from version 5.

I don't know what version of Redhat your using but I really like 7.2 now although a year ago I thought it totally sucked and was a royal pain in the ass. I guess I have gotten good enough with linux now that redhat is not a problem any longer.

Luke, I mean Centurian, the force is with you. RedHat 7.2 and 7.3 both are very good. 8.0 looks very good as well although the RedHat *.0 and *.1 versions traditionally have been pretty buggy.

I think I will go ahead and get 8.0 next week when it comes out and upgrade all my desktops/laptops, assuming a short and successful trial run on my laptop. I just gotta try out their first "official" attempt at a desktop OS.

True, but I've been beta testing it for some time and haven't encountered a single "terminal" bug, just a few minor annoyances that I've already entered into bugzilla.  It seems a lot less buggy (desktop-wise anyway) than Red Hat 7.2.  The buggiest Linux OS I've used by far was Suse 8.0.  It erased my fonts every time I restarted the computer, 3d acceleration wouldn't work due to some RPM upgrade problem, KDE crashed all the time, and it was very slow.  Red Hat 8 with gnome 2 is great. I know a lot of people don't like GNOME, but seriously, it's almost exactly like KDE anyway and it uses less memory.  Red Hat also has gone through a lot of trouble to make it stable.  I haven't had GNOME crash a single time on me.  It's also incredibly easy to install fonts compared to earlier verisions of Linux.  Nautilus has gotten very good too.  It loads into memory on startup and therefore starts instantly when you click on it just like (ugh) windows explorer.  There's also this cool font config utility in gnome 2 that lets you adjust how to anti alias the fonts,  and special settings for LCD monitors and stuff.  All in all a great improvement in usablility.

muffin man, mandrake is good, i found it less irritating than red hat (but i am using mandrake 8.2 compared with red hat 7.0) however i have only used red hat and mandrake for destop stuff, so if using for something else then i have no clue at all...

The buggiest distro i have used is Mandrake Secure Server Edition 6.0.

I've been toying around with Lycoris for a few days now and my conclusion so far is that it's probably the most suitable distro for a Windows user to discover Linux, but it would probably bug the hell out of someone who's used to Linux already.
the menus are adapted to almost exactly match the M$ menus, everything is Windows-ized.
I don't think I would install it for personal use, because I like the way my SuSE forces me to think about what I do, I learn slowly but I learn.

I think Lycoris would bug the shit out of me based on what they say at their site. Windows eXPiss emulated on Linux it seems.

I think I may shell out and get the Mandrake server version...

All I wanna do is install Frozen fucking Bubble, and Red Hat has to fuck with me (Dependency errors, random quits and freezes, ...one of the major reasons I'm switching distros. I'm not exactly a newbie, after toggling a few things I got Apache working (Is there more to it?). I'm pretty good at the console. All I want is for stuff to work.

I'm in Winblowes now, making Mandrake CDs.

Anyone use Gentoo? We've got all of the other bases covered, and it looks interesting.
