i've seen a few posts (just read one:
http://forum.fuckmicrosoft.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=001549
where ppl mention 2.4.x and 2.5.x kernal versions. if 2.5 is newer then 2.4, then why is 2.5 the standerd kernal? i've never touched 2.5, but i read somewhere that it has a lot more then 2.4 and can even be upgraded w/o reboot, so why didn't--for example--redhat use 2.5 w/ rh8?
wasn't 2.5 out for the release, or is it still under development, or isn't it an official kernal or what?

if the second number is odd then it is a development release. 2.3, 2.1, 1.9, 1.7, etc. were all development. 2.6 will be the official stable kernel.
