Switching from Windows to Linux ...

First of all I want to welcome everyone on this forum. I came here because I was looking for operating system solution other than Windows. I heard of Linux, and I started to get interested in it, now Im thinking of switching from Windows to Linux. There was this one time when I got Mandrake 8.2 on My computer, but I got couple errors during installation and after instalation I couldnt setup My cable modem to work so I removed Linux from My computer. I had no manual, no instructions, and i didnt know what to do after installation. Now I think Im going to give it another try, and Im asking You to help Me choose any easy distribution for beginning. I was thinking of SuSe, Lycoris, Mandrake, or WinLinux 2003. Im waiting for Your help, and soon Im hopeing to join Linux user community.

I would go with SuSe, Redhat, or Mandrake.  In my opinion, Lycoris hasn't been around long enough to have all the bugs worked out and probably isn't the best choice for being brought to the world of Linux.  I use Mandrake 8.2 myself.  If you try Mandrake again, I'll try my best to help you with any problems you might have.

You could also try Xandros Linux, as they are supposed to be extremely easy to install and is compatible with a good chunk of Windows programs as well.  (Although it's a bit pricey for my taste.)

I just tried Knoppix 3.1 on My computer, and all My hardware was detected automatically, does that mean that when I install Linux hardware on My computer is going to be detected automatically and Im not going to have to worry about it? Im still waiting for Your advice in choseing Linux distribution right for Me...

It's up to you to choose what is right for you, not for us to choose. I personally choose RedHat for desktop use and would recommend it to people who are new to Linux. It is very user friendly.  And yes, if Knoppix detected everything then RedHat and other distros should as well. But heck, if you like Knoppix you can just install it to your hard drive.

Im switching to Linux tomorrow, and I read on this forum that Red Hat 8.0 doesnt have everything worked out, mabe i should start with SuSE 8.1 Personal?

Where did you read that? RedHat has and has had more things "worked out" than any of the other distros if you want my opinion.

What about it? All he said is they didn't include a couple of apps that he wanted. You can fix that by installing apt and do:

# apt-get install xine
# apt-get install mplayer-skins
# apt-get install mpg123

That's about 2 minutes of work.

I got Red Hat 8.0 installed, but it didnt detected My cable modem. I use RCA DCM226 cable modem. What am I suppose to do? Right now Im on Knoppix 3.1. My modem is connected through USB, mabe I should get network card compatibile with Red Hat. Im not going back to Windows, id rather buy network card, what do You suggest for Me to do?

I'm confused. Your cable modem hooks directly up to your computer via USB?? If so do you also have an RJ45 (Ethernet) port on your Modem? Could you boot into RedHat and run the "dmesg" command and paste the output into a message? You can redirect the output to a file by "dmesg > dmesg.txt".
