Website blocking software
« on: 21 January 2003, 02:55 »
I'm wondering what a good program would be to block websites for Linux. One that works with iptables. If your wondering why.. I want to block some websites like www.microsoft.com etc.
I use my hotmail email on here to keep from begin spammed by trolls. If you want my good email address for something then ask... :)

I use squid for this:

http://voidmain.kicks-ass.net/redhat/zapping_ads_with_squid_and_adzapper.html

Although my above instructions are for setting up ad blocking using squid you can also add domains, web sites and IP addresses to block. For instance, .microsoft.com, .msn.com and many others are banned from existence in my house.

As a double protection I also run my own DNS server in my house in which I have set up an authoritative zone for .microsoft.com and .msn.com, .doubleclick.net, etc but contain no records so if any program in my house tries to connecto to any host on the .microsoft.com (and others) domain my machines just don't see them as even existing... But you don't need to go that far. Squid works perfectly for blocking your browsers.

It's in the instructions if you have apt-get installed. If you have Red Hat install apt-get:

If you don't have Red Hat you can surely find it at www.rpmfind.net.

They are simply conducting a survey of how you use the most popular operating system in the world so that they may tailor palladium specifically to you, the home user.  All information gathered will help bring about a better operating system and even a better world through microsoft's world outreach plans.  they just didn't want you to worry unecessarilly about the details and they don't want to uneccessarily burden you by forcing you to fill out a voluntary form, so they implemented this service to help you, and it requires no additional effort on your part.  isnt' that great?

damn, my crackpipe is now empty,,,, hold on while i refill......
